Tolkin's worldview reflects a profound and rather refreshing ambivalence.
Tolkin's directorial debut, THE RAPTURE (1991), was a haunting story about a contented but unfulfilled sensualist who, practically overnight, becomes a born-again Christian preparing for the final reckoning.
Tolkin adapted his first novel, The Player, for the 1992 Robert Altman film that brought the writer his greatest exposure and acclaim and revitalized the director's career.

Airline officials walk on eggshells so as not to offend the bereaved, the media reports on the disgruntled ex-employee that caused the crash, and Frank is driven against the state of post-Lockerbie style national mourning.
At least Tolkin is sure enough of his territory not to allow Frank to apportion blame for the crash onto himself.
As an author, Tolkin is assured enough to pull all these disparate and potentially bad taste strings together into a satisfying whole, even if his attempt at a resonant finale is slightly over-milked for effect.

Though LA Story came out in 1990 and seems to lampoon the 80s, Michael Tolkin goes way beyond his collaborative work with Robert Altman(The Player) with this pitch fl comedy.
Michael Tolkin's "The New Age" was the most scathing movie indictment of the American dream gone Sonoma catalog since Albert Brooks' brilliant satire "Lost In America".

Management guru Peter F. Drucker will be remembered as the father of modern management with more than 30 books on the subject of business.
Tolkin has garnered acclaim for his classic dark comedies "The Player" and "Among the Dead." His most ambitious novel yet, "Under Radar" is a tale of guilt and redemption that is "provocative.
His subsequent jail term works a kind of purification on Tom: he suffers traumatic memory loss, after which he becomes privy to a sensational story about missionaries and goddess worshipers--and then tries desperately to regain the respect of his family and friends.

I'm not sure why, but Michael Tolkin's movies (esp. "The Rapture") really have an effect on me. I think "The Rapture" was a really misunderstood movie, I know it took me a total of three times seeing it before I really...
It's a good story, but it's basically a skeleton of what would become Robert Altman's kaleidoscopic adaptation, filled with blink and you'll miss it cameos and references Tolkin's novel feels too heavy and it also lacks the humor present in the film.
In the character of Frank Gale, author Michael Tolkin has exquisitely captured the sense of urban angst and emptyness that pervade modern life.

Michael Tolkin Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Tolkin's film projects similarly reveal his status as a rare commodity in today's movie industry--a feeling intellectual.
Tolkin's original screenplay (from his story) was rewritten by Henry Bean ("Internal Affairs" 1990) but it seems firmly set in the same morally slippery universe as his other works.
A highly reflexive, cynical satire of contemporary Hollywood, "The Player" was clearly the work of people who understood, hated, and loved the industry from the inside.

 The Rapture (Michael Tolkin)
Obviously director Michael Tolkin had an axe to grind and I wouldn't consider recommending this film if it wasn't for the ending.
In taking seriously the possibility that what to many seems an unreasonable faith might be true, this film is similar to another recent film "Frailty" (though the true literary predecessor of this film is Dostoevsky's chapter on the "Grand Inquisitor" in The Brothers Karamazov).
I love the work of Michael Tolkin, he also directed the great film "THE NEW AGE" starring Judy Davis & Peter Weller.

Made during the fl film boom that followed the success of BOYZ N THE HOOD, DEEP COVER is that rare and beautiful thing--a genuinely smart action movie.
Screenwriters Michael Tolkin (THE PLAYER) and Henry Bean have written a clever but gritty, hard-hitting script, and director Bill Duke (A RAGE IN HARLEM) brings just the right tone to the material.
It has an appropriately gloomy palette of glaring reds and dark blues and a dissonant, hip-hop-influenced score that enhances the sardonic mood.
