Michael Trend, MP for Windsor and a former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, said that he "had a misunderstanding, honestly and genuinely held," about the rules relating to the additional costs allowance.
In a letter to the Commons fees office, Mr Trend said he claimed the allowance on his Windsor home, 25 miles from London, which he now realised was against the rules.
Most MPs claim the allowance and Mr Trend's decision to return the money, which followed a story in a Sunday newspaper, may encourage others to check the propriety of their arrangements.
