Michael Wittmann (April 22, 1914 - August 8, 1944) was a SS-Hauptsturmführer (SS-Captain) in Schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101 during World War II, and one of the most successful tank commanders in history.
Wittmann began his career in earnest in April 1941, during Germany's intervention of the Italian campaign in the Balkans.
Wittmann's unit, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH), distinguished itself for the first time in the capture of the Greek capital, and formed the spearhead alongside the 9th Panzer division which punched though the Greek countryside.

Wittmann watched the column of the 4th County of London Yeomanry leave Villers-Bocage and advance on his tanks on Point 213, nose to tail through a sunken road.
Wittmann saw his opportunity and decided to attack with one tank between Point 213 and Villers-Bocage, cutting off "A" Squadron of the 4th CLY and ordered his accompanying two operational tanks to hold their position.
Wittmann was then brought back in his Schwimmwagen to Point 213, where he joined with Karl Mobius, commander of the 1st Company and discussed the second attack that the 101st Abteilung was about to deliver.

 Michael Wittmann
Born on April 22, 1914, Wittmann was raised on a farm near Vogetal, Oberpfalz, where he hunted on his father's farm land and became exposed to farming machinery during his childhood.
After the French campaign in 1940, the LSSAH became re-equipped with six of the new Sturmgeschütz StuG III Ausf.A. Wittmann was given command of one of these StuG IIIs armed with a 75mm short-barreled gun, and fought during the Balkan campaign in Greece.
Wittmann returned to Russia in January 1943, fighting in the Kharkov area during the winter of 1942-43, and during operation "Zitadelle" (Kursk) he destroyed 30 tanks, mainly T-34/76s and KV Is, and 28 anti-tank guns and two batteries of artillery.

Wittmann was the commander of the Tiger tank which caused the carnage at on the road from Villers Bocage during the battle for Normandy.
Wittmann ran back to his Tiger, placed his crew on battle alert and although he was not able to establish contact with other units, or did not want to to maintain radio silence, he broke cover and moved off in the direction of the British headquarters section tanks (RHQ) protected between A and B squadrons.
Wittmann and his crew's bodies were moved from the unmarked field grave to the La Gambe cemetery in Normandy in 1983.

AFV Club have followed their first Tiger I Late (Kit AF35079) with this Michael Wittmann Special which is basically the same as the first kit but with some new and updated parts plus additional resin parts including a Wittmann figure and gives the option of building a Command tank with additional antenna fitted.
This resin figure represents Michael Wittmann wearing the leather tankers jacket and field cap with a wide grin as he was photographed just after the Villers-Bocage action in July 1944 with the figure capturing this photo well.
The full body is in one piece with separate arms and head but while the arms have locating pins included I found these more a hindrance and after cutting them off the arms fitted much better but there was some minor trimming of the arm/shoulder join required for a good fit.

Maybe I'm out of line here, but I think it bears mentioning that Wittmann was not regular army; he was SS.
My point is, wanting to accurately depict Wittmann's Tiger is perfectly fine; referring to a Nazi butcher as "a real hero" is not.
Intelligent and responsible people don't accuse individuals of having "committed God knows how many atrocities while engaged in counter partisan operations in the Balkans and on the Eastern Front," and of being a "Nazi butcher" without providing some proof to support their claim.
