In the provincial election of 1958, Schreyer was elected to the Manitoba Legislature as a member of the Manitoba Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, representing the rural constituency of Brokenhead.
Schreyer returned to provincial politics in 1969, and was elected on June 8 as leader of the New Democratic Party of Manitoba.
Schreyer was, and is still, especially esteemed as a painter of horses, of peasant life in Wallachia and Moldavia, and of battle incidents.

Ms Schreyer has yet to declare at what level she believes the EU budget should be set, but is thought to favour a figure in the region of 1.1 per cent of gross national income - about €10bn a year more than the six net contributors want.
Ms Schreyer says she wants "fair treatment for all contributors" and has suggested a more general rebate system for all countries that get a bad deal out of the budget.

FRANKFURT - European Union Budget Commissioner Michaele Schreyer said yesterday she did not expect the Commission to block new German laws subsidising so-called green energy.
Schreyer said the Commission had already approved similar support measures from the Danish and Belgian governments and that there was therefore little danger that the German measures would run into problems.
Schreyer's remarks applied to the feed-in law for renewable energies (EEG), but the law subsidising power produced at combined heat and power plants (CHP) is part of the same complex.

But to the astonishment of MEPs, she insisted the matter was not brought to her attention until May 2003, even though officials deemed it important enough to refer to fraud investigators.
Ms Schreyer insisted she was not told for three years that her own officials had received the internal audit report on Eurostat and referred it to Olaf.

The goal is to wipe out sales of fl-market cigarettes - sometimes genuine but these days usually counterfeit - that deprive manufacturers of sales and governments of tax revenue while generating profits for organized crime or even terror groups.
