The Wonderful Years of Bumper Booksales: Michal Viewegh's enduring popularity - 04-03-2005 - Radio Prague (via ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
I met up with Michal Viewegh to ask him about how it was to be a writer in the current Czech climate.
But with Viewegh this is not the case, and I think this is why he is so popular.
This passage is taken from Viewegh's latest book, 'Vybijena' which means 'Dodgeball', and nicely encapsulates a lot of the themes that come up in the novel.

Viewegh's clever, satirical novel is the story of the trials, tribulations, adventures, and loves of Beata Kralova, as told through the adoring eyes of her much older tutor.
Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, this frank, fast-moving yarn details Beata's search for love and acceptance as she goes through one lover after another and takes up and discards causes (religion, environment, feminism, and animal rights) just as casually.
In this brilliant snapshot of modern-day Prague, with all its new freedoms, Viewegh describes the "new millionaires" of Czech society, the Prague mafiosi, and the omnipresent expatriate Americans, to name just a few of his memorable types of characters.

Rabbits, Toyen, and so forth: Bringing Up Girls in Bohemia
I supposed at the time that he meant he was what we call in the US a mid-list author, but this was not really it, because mid-list authors fall into publishing limbo and can be of all descriptions except for best-selling or utter dreck.
Viewegh sells pretty well in the Czech Republic and has been translated into other languages.
We will just have to hope that Michal Viewegh will not have the same reaction to any of my novels when they are (published and) translated into Czech.

Novelist Michal Viewegh: My popularity is a false image, but I'm not complaining - 03-09-2004 - Radio Prague   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Michal Viewegh is one of the most popular and most translated Czech authors today.
One of the reasons why his books are so popular is that the readers find there a piece of their own destiny.
I met Michal Viewegh in a café of one of the biggest Prague bookstores and asked him whether he believes his books are equally appealing to readers abroad.

Michal Viewegh has some talent, and that's the best thing you could say about this book.
Viewegh does just this throughout BUG with all kinds of asides and gimmicks.
He shows a delightful inconsistency toward Czech novelist Daniela Hodrova with an early veiled barb: "One day I hope to be able to understand the novels of Daniela Hodrova" but later on in the text incorporates a straightforward quote from Hodrova pertaining to writing in general.

Michal Viewegh: The Creative Writing Lesson / Lekce tvůrčího psaní
In the words of its author, this intimate psychological novella is "mainly about how difficult it is to write - indeed to experience - a story of real emotion in the Czech Republic".
Masterful in the telling, concise in its composition, appreciative of gradation and mystery, deft in its linking of individual motifs: all this testifies to the charm of this treatment in prose of a "crash-course in writing".

Amazon.com: Daylight in Nightclub Inferno : Czech Fiction from the Post-Kundera Generation: Books: Elena Lappin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The first selection is an excerpt from much-heralded young author J. Topol's novel, Sister, a postmodernist stream-of-consciousness piece with lots of perplexing ellipsis marks and leaps of imagination; it apparently is supposed to be a satire on literary criticism.
Michal Ajvaz hits us with all kind of little truths the entire way thru his "The Pohorelic Bistro." Halina Pawlowska provides a look at a young Ukrainian girl as a Young Pioneer with the Socialist Youth League and as always, entertains us with the little details she is so good at capturing.
The much-touted Daniela Hodrova, ordinarily difficult to read because of her overreliance on postmodern literary gimmicks, is here with some surprisingly linear narrative vignettes of Prague women; they are unremarkable except for the topical references to Prague landmarks.
