Pioneering director Michel Gondry's remarkable creative energy and ability to innovate have resulted in some of the most visually stunning music videos in the history of the medium, and his wild imagination and organic, childlike imagery raised the bar of what one could achieve in the short format.
Michel Gondry is a native of Versailles who was raised in a freethinking family that encouraged and supported his creative endeavors; his parents harbored a deep love of pop music and the works of Duke Ellington, in particular.
Gondry's grandfather Constant Martin is often credited with creating one of the earliest synthesizers (the Clavioline), and although his father would often bemoan his own lack of musical inspiration, he kept the spirit alive by owning a shop that sold musical instruments.

Gondry is small, with curly hair and a game laugh, and at 43 almost a Gallic insert for Bob Dylan's “Forever Young” (rightly, his documentary on himself is called “I've Been 12 Forever”).
Gondry doodles that a bit more – one half expects a cartoon bubble to float above his head – and remarks, “When my boy was about 15 he was fascinated by sharks, but by imagining them so much he was too scared to visit the ocean.
Gondry is a bit surprised when asked if his growing up in Versailles, a town ruled by the palace, its grounds and Old Regime streets, generated his blithe but orderly imagination, his sense of spatial theater.

But it is also typical of Gondry that the inspiration for this work should come from a childhood toy, as much of his work is inspired by memories from his childhood and is filled with teddy bears, train sets, model airplanes, and colorful creatures.
In this respect, it often seems that Michel Gondry is less a music video director creating short, artful commercials for major-label pop albums than he is an idiosyncratic auteur with a distinctive and personal body of work that happens to feature internationally famous pop stars as actors.
Gondry’s sensitivity to the structure of pop music is another of his peculiar strengths as a director, due in part to his experience as a drummer in the French neo-punk band Oui Oui (for whom he directed his first music videos).

While Michel Gondry has created fantastical worlds onscreen — his arresting visual images have elevated him to auteur status in the realm of music videos (Björk, White Stripes) and independent films ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") — the idiosyncratic filmmaker has also achieved the improbable in the real world.
Predictably enough, Gondry's affinity for reality-bending is also evident in his third feature-length film, "The Science of Sleep." The director, who is currently putting the finishing touches on the picture, said the story centers on a daydreamer who retreats into his visions and begins to confuse them with reality.
Gondry has said in the past that the film is a loose interpretation of the "Everlong" video he shot for the Foo Fighters in 1997, where a man saves his girlfriend from hellions in a dream world.

From humble beginnings 36 year old Michel Gondry has since become one of the most sought after video and commercial directors in the world.
Describing the film as 'a tale about human nature, frustration and sexual education' Gondry is keen to use some of the more surreal elements that often pop up in his work such as the use of over-stated background projection and picture morphing in the movie.
Gondry's positivity is unlikely to have been hampered by the success of Being John Malkovich, a film that five years ago would have been almost unthinkable in the staid world of Hollywood movie studios.
