Plancherel theorem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, the Plancherel theorem is a result in harmonic analysis, first proved by Michel Plancherel.
The theorem is valid in abstract versions, on locally compact abelian groups in general.
Even more generally, there is a version of the Plancherel theorem which makes sense for non-commutative locally compact groups satisfying certain technical assumptions.

 Math Colloquium
Plancherel measure is an important probability model that encodes the probabilistic behavior of lengths of increasing subsequences in random permutations.
It has been shown in recent years to be in many ways a discrete analogue of the GUE (Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) random matrix model.
I will survey some new results on this model and some applications to the combinatorics of random permutations and random "sorting networks", which are ways to sort a list of N distinct numbers from increasing to decreasing order by applying a minimal-length sequence of adjacent transpositions.

Having worked for as a spy for the French government, Sébastien Grenier is now enjoying a peaceful life in Zurich, living with his German girlfriend and working as a financier.
Lino Ventura, the archetypal hard man of French cinema since the late 1950s, manages to hold the whole thing together by the force of his personality alone, although he does for the most part look as if he is completely lost.
He is only slightly outstaged by Michel Piccoli who plays the shadowy Mr Chance, as enigmatic and as unfathomable as it is possible to be.

 Loeks Research Overview
The structure of the Riemannian symmetric spaces (a subset of the semisimple symmetric spaces) is relatively simple and a Plancherel formula for these symmetric spaces was given by Harish Chandra in the mid 50's.
The structure of the general semisimple symmetric spaces is a lot more complicated and consequently no results about their representations were obtained until the late 70's, early 80's, when a number of results about the structure and geometry of these symmetric spaces were published.

The principal object of study is the dual space $\hat{G}$ of a locally compact group $G$, i.e., the set of equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of $G$ furnished with a natural topology (which in this book is called the Fell topology).
Topics discussed include the group $C\sp *$-algebra of a locally compact group, the dual space, tensor products, direct integrals, and the Plancherel theorem.
As the author observes, giving a complete treatment of this material would require a lengthy digression into the theory of von Neumann algebras, representations of $C\sp *$-algebras, and direct integral decompositions that would substantially increase the size of the book.

As a rule, these individuals remain in residence in the Department for a week or longer, during which time they are available for interaction with local faculty and students.
Speakers during the past year included Colin Adams (topology), Mike Artin (algebraic geometry), Michel Herman (dynamical systems), Philip Holmes (applied mathematics), Henryk Iwaniec (number theory), Sergei Kuksin (mathematical physics), John Mather (dynamical systems), Giles Pisier (analysis), Rick Schoen (differential geometry), Ridgway Scott (numerical analysis), Roger Temam (partial differential equations), and a host of others.
An Introduction to Research lecture series, to which speakers are invited because of their national reputations as fine expositors of mathematics, is aimed at and extremely popular among graduate students.
