Coach: 'Last year' for early Penguins pick - Boston.com
Michel Therrien made only one promise after learning Thursday he will return as the Pittsburgh Penguins' coach next season.
Therrien's optimistic outlook -- he expects his team to be in the playoffs as early as next season -- is based on how a mostly young team played down the stretch of the Penguins' worst season (22-46-14) since they were 16-58-6 in 1983-84.
But Therrien could see an inexperienced team not only adjusting to a rigid system that was much different from the more wide-open system played under former coach Eddie Olczyk, but embracing it.

Mind you, Therrien has paid his dues, a career junior and minor-league bench boss who may be entirely adequate, given the right opportunity (and this may not be it).
By hiring Therrien, Boivin put an "experienced" or career coach behind the bench, but gave Carbonneau the title (assistant coach) and role that will allow the former Hab captain to be deeply involved on a day-to-day basis.
It would be a mistake to call Therrien a puppet or figurehead, but make no mistake—Carbonneau will have a huge say in the coaching of this team and may well be apprenticing for the balance of this season with an eye toward being the head coach by next season.
