In the 14th century, Michelangelo, painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel from a cramped, supine position, wrote several sonnets in the spirit of burlesque and self-parody.
I experience passing visions of us superimposed on a Michelangelo painting but I don't share them, as I know he wouldn't be amused.
It is not a question of deciding whether either Michelangelo painting the Sistine chapel or Galileo dropping weights off the campanile at Pisa was engaged in a futile occupation.
Turn Off’s song “Michelangelo,” released on the progressive Deram label in 1967, is a true classic of British psychedelic pop.

The 23rd Turn Off's song "Michelangelo", released on the progressive Deram label in 1967, is a true classic of British psychedelic pop.
But unfortunately, "Michelangelo" and its flipside "Leave Me Alone" were the only songs released by the Liverpool group, so named because Liverpool was, in fact, the 23rd turn off from the M6 highway.
The Dreams of Michelangelo traces the career of the group chronologically, featuring all the released material by The Kirkbys and The 23rd Turn Off combined with unreleased songs and demo material recorded along the way, including early versions of "Michelangelo".
Carolyn Hester, in an interview with Richie Unterberger in Urban Spacemen and Wayfaring Strangers, (8) reveals that Fariña actually had such an adventure in Ireland, where he was tricked by the IRA into believing that there would be no people aboard the boat he was to bomb.
Carolyn Hester makes no reference to the short story, but she believes that Fariña was deeply affected by that experience, and she felt that it explained much of his subsequent behavior.
Like Tennyson's Ulysses, who lost so many of his companions at sea, and in old age found that "the deep moans round with many voices," perhaps Fariña was tormented by the memory of the men killed on the boat.

The outer face of the gateway was designed by Michelangelo but was executed by Nanni di Baccio Bigio in 1561; the two side arches were opened in 1879.
He finds out the next day that five people died in the explosion, although he had been led to believe that the boat would be unoccupied.
Carolyn Hester told Richie Unterberger that Fariña had undergone such an experience, and she believed that it profoundly influenced Fariña's character thereafter (see the pages on Urban Spacemen and Been Down So Long on this website).
Hester, who also had family in Ireland, once visited Fariña's relatives there, and she believed it possible that Fariña's family may have been involved in the IRA.

A young Herbie Hancock contributed the bulk of the score to Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 screen classic, evoking the ambience of swinging London with grooves that create effective bluesy moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.
Rock fans remember the film and the soundtrack for the inclusion of a rare Yardbirds number, "Stroll On" (actually, an adaptation of "The Train Kept A-Rollin'"), one of only three songs they recorded with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars.
