HALIFAX (CP) - An expansion planned for a Michelin tire factory on the East Coast has exposed the company's long-term strategy to rid itself of unionized plants, says a union leader at an Ontario factory that was recently shut down by the French multinational.
In January, Michelin received $10.8 million in subsidies from Nova Scotia to help it upgrade its plant in Waterville, N.S. At the time, plant manager Grant Ferguson said fresh investment is vital for survival in the tire industry.
Michelin has a number of other non-union plants in South Carolina, as well as unionized factories that it bought from BFGoodrich in the early 1990s.

French chefs should stop whining about the Michelin Guide. By Mike Steinberger - Slate Magazine
But the principal object of their ire was the all-powerful Michelin Guide, whose coveted stars can make or break a restaurant (the loss of a star will generally cut a restaurant's turnover by at least 25 percent).
Michelin exercises the influence it does because restaurants matter in France and because the guide, with its army of anonymous inspectors, has proven itself over the years to be a rigorous, honest, and generally excellent judge of them.
Initially awarded three stars in 1965, he was the first chef to use the guide's stamp of approval as a ticket to universal celebrity, becoming a globe-trotting icon with lucrative consulting and endorsement deals.
