For this reason, some anti-cure autistics such as Jim Sinclair and Michelle Dawson prefer to be referred to as "autistics" or "autistic people" instead of "people with autism" or "people who have autism", because "person with autism" implies that autism is something that can be removed from the person [3] (see person-first terminology).
Michelle Dawson's open letter to the Autism Society of Canada received 92 signatures by the time it was sent, October 22, 2003, and another 52 signatures on the web version which were signed after the original letter was sent [20].

Autism Information Library: In Support of Michelle Dawson and Her Work
And now we see it, in an attack on Michelle Dawson containing a good deal of unfounded speculation: A Mother's Perspective, written by Kit Weintraub of FEAT and hosted by the Association for Science in Autism Treatment, which says it doesn't normally host opinion letters but thought this was just too important not to print.
Dawson herself says that she would welcome criticism of her article, but that she would prefer it be legitimate criticism of the content of her article, not unfounded attacks on her character.
It accuses Dawson in particular and the rest of autistics who share her positions in general of advocating the neglect of autistic children and the perpetuation of suffering.

Moggy Mania: Autistics.org - Support Michelle Dawson
For those not aware, Michelle Dawson is an autistic woman in Canada fighting for the rights of autistic adults and children to be given the same treatment as members of other disabilities -- accommodation and acceptance on a legal level, rather than government-sponsored abuse.
Michelle has been instrumental, as far as I can tell, in getting a major clinician (and his university department) thinking about autism in a very autism-friendly manner.
Despite this, a mainstream parent of two autistic children (Kit Weintraub, FEAT Wisconsin) decided to have a go at Michelle (rather than what she said in the article purported to be the reason for the "critique").

Michelle Dawson, a 45 year-old autistic woman, has come together with a Canadian research team headed by Dr. Mottron to study Autistic Spectrum Disorders from a different perspective: to no longer use the idea of “average intellect” as a basis for a cognitive ideal.
They are seeing the flaws in the designs of these tests to not measure much beyond the norm of cognitive functioning; they are ceasing to assume that the reliability of most standard IQ tests is consistent throughout the whole diverse range of humanity.

Michelle Dawson is an autistic who works as a researcher, affiliated with the Pervasive Developmental Disorders information processing laboratory at Hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies in Montréal.
Recently, her ethics- and human rights-based arguments were cited by the Supreme Court of Canada in their decision against a group of parents attempting to have the human rights of autistics replaced by the single "right" to "medically necessary" intensive behavior interventions designed to extinguish autistic traits and abilities.
Many consider Ms Dawson to be among the leaders of a global effort to have autism recognized as a different way of being human, rather than as a disease or series of defects to be eradicated.

Dawson — a precocious one-year-old who earlier this month reached the top of the stairs in his Lafayette, Colorado home — surprised both mom and dad by plopping off the couch (once the episode of COPS he was watching on TV was over) and taking five bold self-initiated steps.
After Dawson's first successful unassisted walking experience, his normally non-pushy parents encouraged him to try again (and again, and again, and again).
When asked what motivated him to attempt such a dramatic exploit, a overly confident Dawson responded, "Well, I was sitting with Dad on the couch when all of a sudden Mom came down the hall holding this cool piece of string in her left hand.
