		At Michigan Military Academy, Orchard Lake (Fall 1892), ERB's commandant was Captain Charles King, a name he later used in his novels.
		Having failed the entrance examination to the U. Military Academy at West Point, he enlisted as a private in the Seventh U. Cavalry, for he had the notion that he might still obtain a commission as an officer if he distinguished himself in a difficult assignment.
		Unable to secure a commission in any military unit including the Chinese Army, he enlisted in the Seventh U.S. Cavalry but at the time of his discharge he was still a private.

		He left that post and founded the Michigan Military Academy in September 1877.

		Edgar Rice Burroughs was captain and quarterback of the the Michigan Military Academy football team in 1893 and 1894, and possibly in 1896, when he took a position with academy as a geology instructor and Assistant Commandant.
		About the only teams that could beat us were such teams as Notre Dame and the University of Michigan, and at that we once held to a tie score the University of Michigan team.
		Also included are three other photos of MMA cadets, but none indicate that Burroughs is or is not depicted.

		Lewis Griffin Gorton was born November 18, 1859 at Waterloo, Michigan, the son of Aaron T. Gorton.
		He was a graduate of Chelsea High School, as well as of the Michigan Normal College (1879).
		Gorton taught science at the Michigan Military Academy and later became the principal of Duffield School (1883-1885) and Bishop School (1885-1893) both in Detroit, Michigan.

	ERBzine 0603: L. Dunn at M.M.A
		Set on the north-east coast of Orchard Lake, the former Academy overlooks the now picturesque lake which at one time was not quite so peaceful as the stillness was shattered by cadets who would fire their cannons at targets set upon floats several hundred yards from the shoreline.
		In the west wing of the Academy building that was once home to the library frequented by the young cadets, it was now lined with display boards and tables filled with memorabilia supplied by Buzz and Brian.
		Knowing something of the Academy and Brian's subsequent research and his discovery in local newspapers of the hoax 'duel' that almost took place between Burroughs and his fellow cadet Charles Campbell, I asked if the event caused consternation amongst local residents of students running around, brandishing firearms at one another.
