The Michigan Senate is the upper body of the Michigan Legislature.
Senators are elected at the same time as the governor and serve 4-year terms concurrent with the governor's term of office.
Senate and gubernatorial elections are offset by two years from U.S. Presidential elections (e.g., Presidential elections were in 1996 and 2000, gubernatorial elections were in 1998 and 2002).

LANSING - Six months after they lost him in a hunting accident, the family of Lee Earl Edmiston had reason to be a little more at ease Thursday as the Michigan Senate passed two bills setting penalties for those accused of drunk hunting causing injury or death.
Senate bills 497 and 498 passed unanimously, making hunting while drunk causing injury a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Although the bills are now eligible to be considered by the House, both senators advised it would likely be September before a House vote was taken up by one of three different committees.

First term Senators are always the most vulnerable - they generally have thin records of legislative accomplishment, have not been able to completely ingratiate themselves with the local power structure and don't have that aura of invincibility which comes from winning two or more consecutive Senate races.
Given that Michigan is still more Democrat than Republican, we'd have to rate this as a "leans Democrat" Senate race...but a strong GOP candidate would have an excellent chance of picking up the seat.
