Michigan Highways: M-35 - The Highway Henry Ford Stopped
In 1919, the State Highway Department designated a new trunkline route to run northwesterly from the Negaunee area through the Huron Mountains of northwestern Marquette and northeastern Baraga Counties, then southwesterly along the Keweenaw Bay shoreline to L'Anse.
The uncompleted portion of the highway through the Hurons was cancelled and, within a decade, the entire route of M-35 from US-41/M-28 (between Negaunee and Marquette) to US-41 at L'Anse was removed from the state trunkline system.
M-35 began in Menominee at the Wisconsin state line and proceeded northerly through Escanaba and Gwinn to Neguanee, where it was now severed from the remaining section beginning at L'Anse-Baraga and continuing westerly to US-45 near Rockland.

Woodward was planned to be the most important of the five major avenues (along with Michigan, Grand River, Gratiot, and Jefferson) planned by judge Augustus Woodward that extend from downtown Detroit in differing directions.
In Oakland County, the important cities of Ferndale, Royal Oak, and Birmingham, Michigan, including the Detroit Zoo, are centered on Woodward Avenue.
At the time, there were no single-digit state routes in Michigan, as in 1939, the single-digit numbers (M-X) were reserved by MDOT to be used for future superhighways to be built across the state.

Michigan’s scenic and recreation resources, which exceed those of neighboring, equally densely populated states, include lengthy, often spectacular shorelines on lakes and rivers; hilly terrain; large areas covered by forests; a climate that provides relief from summer heat and is more conducive to winter sports than areas farther S; and bountiful fish and wildlife populations.
The population swelled from 9000 in 1820 to 29,000 in 1830 and 212,000 in 1840.

M-5 is a 21 mile (34 km) highway in the metro Detroit area of the U.S. state of Michigan.
Local residents have long opposed extension of I-275 to its proposed connection with I-75 in Clarkston, because of the many lakes and parklands that would be adversely affected by the construction of such a freeway, and residents also fear a drop in property values.

OWPD: Operating with the Presence of Drugs
The State of Michigan intends to employ these tests to determine whether a motorist is “driving drunk,” without regard to the number of nanograms or picograms of drug metabolites detected.
With many states passing medical marijuana laws permitting small amounts of marijuana to be purchased and used under a doctor’s direction, Michigan’s new law may violate the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause, as it fails to recognize that there are legal users of marijuana.
When the State of Georgia passed a similar law in 1996 prohibiting a driver from operating a motor vehicle with “any amount of a controlled substance” in his or her body, the Georgia courts were forced to address the questions that now confront our state and its citizens.

In fact, the numbering plan for U.S. numbered highways was the model for the Interstate System—but in mirror image (for example, U.S. 1 is on the East Coast, while I-5 is on the West Coast; U.S. 10 is in the north while I-10 is in the south).

Although the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 added the words “and defense” to the name of the Interstate System (now the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways), the primary justification for the network was its civilian benefits, such as economic opportunity, safety, relief of congestion, and evacuation of cities.

Michigan Motorists deserve to have speed limits based upon traffic science and scientific studies.
This will allow most motorists to drive at a safe speed when traffic is light on our interstate highways while preserving the ability of the state to set a maximum limit that does not shock or offend the uninformed.
This is used by Colorado and other states to allow police to ticket motorists and get the fine money without costing the motorist $100s of dollars in insurance charges.
