Decommissioning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Decommissioned highway Largely in the United States of America, as the states build freeways as a new classification of highways, the state may strip the old highway of its old designation as a numbered highway or downgrade it to a 'lesser' status.
This is especially common in the United States of America, where as an extreme example, U.S. Highway 66, which connected Chicago and Los Angeles from 1926 until 1972, lost its designation as a U.S. Highway in stages until it disappeared altogether in 1986 in favor of faster, more direct Interstate highways.
Some state highways may be partly, such as Michigan State Highway 21 or wholly (the older Arizona State Highway 79) decommissioned in favor of newer Interstate routes.

The state route marker has always been a diamond and has always contained the familiar "M." In the early years, the diamond was taller than wide, had the words "STATE TRUNKLINE" across the widest part of the diamond, and the "M" and highway number were of the same size.
The state highway system is undergoing some change at present, though, with the potential addition of hundreds (maybe thousands!) of miles of locally maintained roads to the system.

 Michigan Highways: Historic US-25
One of six mainline US Highways "decommissioned" in the state of Michigan, US-25 was originally designated as the US Highway to begin at Port Huron, head southwesterly through Detroit then southerly into Toledo, Ohio and then on through six other states to end on the Atlantic coast in Brunswick, Georgia.
Unlike other U.S. Highways in Michigan which were moved onto their parallel Interstates, portions of US-25 remained on their traditional alignments even after nearby freeways had long opened to traffic.
From the Ohio state line to north of Monroe, the Department of State Highways decided to revive the M-125 designation, playing off the "25" which had been in place there.
