The state is bordered on the N and E by Ontario, on the S by Ohio and Indiana, and on the W by Wisconsin.
Michigan’s scenic and recreation resources, which exceed those of neighboring, equally densely populated states, include lengthy, often spectacular shorelines on lakes and rivers; hilly terrain; large areas covered by forests; a climate that provides relief from summer heat and is more conducive to winter sports than areas farther S; and bountiful fish and wildlife populations.
The population swelled from 9000 in 1820 to 29,000 in 1830 and 212,000 in 1840.

It was not until 1919, however, that the state highway department moved to bridge the Ocqueoc at the Ocqueoc Falls dogleg.
Upon the bridge's completion, the state highway department deemed it "notable for the excellence of the workmanship." The bridge that the highway department engineers delineated for the Ocqueoc River crossing was one that they had only just begun using.
Instead, the highway department used special-design concrete arches up to 80 feet in length "wherever it is possible to secure sufficiently hard foundations, and also where there is clearance enough for water to flow freely without the arch choking the stream too much," according to its Seventh Biennial report.

US Highway system is also marked with standardized signs across the country, MDOT maintains the approximately 2,400 miles of US Highways (including Business Connections) within the state of Michigan.
Michigan was the second jurisdiction in the world to both designate and sign a numbered system of state trunkline highways in 1918-19.
Wisconsin, Michigan's neighbor to the west, was the first place anywhere to have a numbered, signposted state highway system.

The good news is that while the number of vehicles on Michigan roads and the number of miles traveled are increasing, traffic crashes and fatalities are not, and this probably is due to a number of actions taken in recent years.
In late 2000 federal legislation was enacted requiring all states either to adopt.08 percent blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) as the presumptive level of intoxication for driving or lose a portion of their federal highway monies.
Michigan's BAC level currently is.10 percent, and legislation to lower it to.08 (HBs 4084 and 4134) was introduced in 2001.

The Michigan Department of Transportation does correctly note that "the density of development varies considerably throughout Michigan, with the heaviest concentration existing in the southeast portion of the lower peninsula." Even with this obvious disparity in settlement density, there has always been a level of "geographic equity" in the organization of the state highway system.
The state route marker has always been a diamond and has always contained the familiar "M." In the early years, the diamond was taller than wide, had the words "STATE TRUNKLINE" across the widest part of the diamond, and the "M" and highway number were of the same size.
The state highway system is undergoing some change at present, though, with the potential addition of hundreds (maybe thousands!) of miles of locally maintained roads to the system.

Michigan State Highway 8, or M-8, is a short but important Michigan state highway lying within Detroit.
Mich of it is the Davison Expressway, one of the earliest (1944) freeways in America, which became a connector between the John C. Lodge (Michigan State Highway 10) and Fisher (Interstate 75) freeways, the latter its eastern terminus even though the freeway continues.
M-8 should not be confused with U.S. Highway 8 which in Michigan consists solely of a short segment of surface road in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a terminus in Norway, Michigan.

A Michigan State Highway Dept map dating from the time of M-204's debut seems to indicate this highway was initially assigned the designation of M-304.
In exchange, another short state trunkline connector to the west, M-205, is transferred from the state to the Cass Co Road Commission and cancelled as a state trunkline.

Savage Fen is a damp, 425-acre wetland complex that sits amid highways, housing developments, and industries in Scott County, a few miles south of Minneapolis on the south side of the Minnesota River.
In the south, the few fens that exist occur primarily at upwellings on the slopes of river bluffs along the Minnesota and Mississippi river valleys, and in the Coteau des Prairies area of the southwest.
The plan proposes that the state or city buy certain land parcels from willing sellers, plant natural vegetation buffers, educate bluffland owners, and more?all to protect the 10-mile-square watershed surrounding the fen and Bluff Creek, a trout stream flowing through hardwood forests and prairie communities.

The segment connects Interstate 75/U.S. Highway 23 with Michigan State Highway 13.
The only reason why this segment of freeway even exists in Michigan is because it was the former northern freeway terminus of the I-75/US-23 freeway in the 1960s prior to construction of a freeway extension bypassing it.
However, this left the short stretch of freeway south of Kawkalin, which the state highway department designated as CONNECTOR M-13 This segment of freeway is know as Connector 14 to Bay County although the official number is CONN M-13.
