The Michigan State Police is the state police agency for the State of Michigan.
In January and February of 2006, the Michigan State Police deployed several hundred Troopers to the City Of Detroit during Super Bowl XL and worked with local and federal agencies to ensure a safe and enjoyable enivronment for the game and its related festivities.
Troopers with the Michigan State Police are entrusted with the authority to conduct investigations concerning violations of criminal and traffic statutes throughout the state, regardless of city, township, or county boundaries.

State police officials said Monday the agency will drop out of a data-collecting system that came under fire for sharing and collecting personal information between participating states.
When the state joined the pilot project in December 2003, it was one of 13 participating states and the network represented about half of the country's population and half of reported crime.
The Michigan State Police also said it is getting out of the system because it is worried about future funding and unrealistic expectations to expand the project.

MICHIGAN - According to a story in today's Detroit News, the Michigan State Police will begin in January tracking the race of all drivers pulled over for traffic stops.
In July, state police Col. Michael Robinson, who is the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, announced plans to begin keeping track of race and gender data of motorists by October, but then delayed that plan.
The conference comes the same month as a state law that will let police stop a driver solely for not wearing a seat belt; under current law, motorists can't be stopped unless they are committing another infraction.
