Foreigner's leader from the beginning has been British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a "hired gun" of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a later-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth.
Jones soon assembled a group consisting of ex-King Crimson sax player Ian McDonald and ex-Ian Hunter drummer Dennis Elliot (both of whom were British), along with New York musicians Al Greenwood (keyboards), Ed Gagliardi (bass), and Lou Gramm (vocals), the latter of which was previously a member of an obscure '70s outfit called Black Sheep.
Jones found immediate songwriting chemistry with Gramm (one of the first songs they wrote together was the eventual hit "Cold As Ice"), resulting in the newly formed band taking the name Foreigner and signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records.

JONES: Yes, I think, in fact a lot of people come and say exactly that, you know, that we were there, sort of the backdrop, our music was the backdrop...
JONES: When you get a chemistry like that, it is very difficult to ignore it, because it is like, -- you know, you look at the partnerships, and it is always, I think something really good comes from partnership, and feed off each other.
JONES: Well, we have a great band, and we have kind of juggled around with some of the songs, and we are playing some songs that we have not played before, like from some older albums, and we are getting great response from them.

Rolling Stone : Foreigner's Double Vision
Jones recruited a new singer and cut a back-to-basics Foreigner album, Unusual Heat, while Gramm, having tasted solo success with two albums in the late Eighties, released a sharp, albeit not-quite-right for the times, pop-metal album with his new band, Shadow King.
And though Gramm and Jones remain committed to finishing a new Foreigner album (their shooting for next spring), both are happy to see their successful if often underrated history tended to with proper respect.
Jones, who is currently finishing work on a 5.1 surround sound DVD audio disc of the band's self-titled, 1977 debut, hints that Foreigner's next album may well reflect shades of the cutting edge global lounge and electronic sounds he's been exposed to by his stepson, noted New York DJ Mark Ronson.

While most 70's bands were being beat into the ground by the punk explosion of the time, Foreigner, Journey and Boston all proved to the world that genuine rock n roll was still relevant and hugely popular.
For the most part, the songs on Foreigner are relatively tame compared to harder rocking bands like Ted Nugent and Aerosmith who were both hugely popular in '77.
However, Foreigner songs still rocked, thanks in part to the riffs of Mick Jones, the soaring, clean vocals of Lou Gramm and the catchy songwriting.

Review | Jukebox Heroes: The Foreigner Anthology by Foreigner
This new two-disc retrospective on the popular but critically maligned hard rock superstars of the late 1970s and 1980s captures what it's like to be at the top of a game nobody is playing anymore.
In an AOR genre dominated by the likes of Styx, Boston, Toto and REO Speedwagon, Foreigner stood out with its lethal combination of Lou Gramm's bluesy vocals and Mick Jones' ear for a rock riff.
Meanwhile, Jones can't conjure up the same level of energy on tracks like "Just Wanna Hold" or "Everything That Comes Around," let alone the Spooky Tooth material included from his pre-Foreigner days.

Well anyway, like most, "Foreigner" had their ride for about four or five records and then the wheels came off for a while.
Although this anthology leaves no stone unturned in capturing the glory days of a band in its prime, once separated, along with some one time excess baggage that never before saw the light of day until it was recently uncovered.
Personally, I thought they bowed out a little too calmly a few years back when the rock and roll shorelines weren't always so welcoming, but thankfully, today "Foreigner" seems recharged and ready to react (reaction to action?) to all this resurgent rock and roll karma that's been unleashed by many of their peers.

Feels Like the First Time | Foreigner | Mick Jones | Guitar Tabs, Music and Riffs
The story of "Feels Like the First Time" can be termed as overnight success of a British classic rock band with the release of their self-titled debut album “Foreigner.” This is one of those rare accomplishments that only a handful of AOR (Album Oriented Rock) musicians have enjoyed in the history of rock’n roll music.
The mastermind behind this song is well known musician Mick Jones, who teamed up with compatriot Ian McDonald and four others Dennis Elliott, and Americans Ed Gagliardi, Lou Gramm and Alan Greenwood who were relatively novices to the arena of rock music, to form the band in 1976.
With all round success of "Feels Like the First Time" and “Cold as Ice”, Foreigner gave a kick-start to the re-establishment of rock era in the late 70’s when punk explosion was trying to take over the immortal art.

With the band's self-titled 1977 debut, Foreigner started appearing regularly on the charts with amixture of guitar-driven numbers ("Hot Blooded", "Feels Like The First Time"), lighter-worthy power ballads ("Waiting For A Girl Like You") and electrifying arena rock ("Juke Box Hero", "Blue Morning, Blue Day").
Along the way, Jones and Gramm pared the band down to a quartet and started workingwith outside collaborators including Junior Walker ("Urgent"), Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins ("I Don't Want To Live Without You") and Jennifer Holiday with the New Jersey Mass Choir ("I Want To Know What Love Is").
Supplementing the wealth of hits on this 2-CD anthology are various tracks from the non-Foreigner canon of Lou Gramm and Mick Jones (with andwithout Spooky Tooth).
