  Mick Karn - Biography
Mick Karn emigrated to London as a Greek Cypriot when he was 3 years old and from an early age was looking for ways to express himself.
Mick explained: "It looked as if musicians were enjoying themselves and I was intrigued by their ability to escape into another world but frustrated with my own attempts to join in, However, it was only a matter of time before I found the right instrument and direction to aim for, purely by chance.
Mick decided to play an unfamiliar five string bass to differentiate his playing from the style listeners had become accustomed to, and in some cases left the bass out altogether, concentrating on bass clarinet as the lead instrument.

Mick Karn: More Better Different - PopMatters Music Review
The title More Better Different summarizes the ways in which the expectations for yet another Mick Karn record (his ninth) can be defied or surpassed, and as such it announces one of the better music-for-art's-sake records released in a long while.
As he began honing his artistic approach long ago when Japan was disbanded in 1982, and has since found his particular voice, Mick Karn is content to further deepen and explore his individual strengths.
Ultimately, the record is a tasteful and attractive example of what Mick Karn has to offer; it emphasizes his mastery of all that he has tried before, yet never obscures his obvious gift as a bass player.

If Mick Karn had performed this on a laser harp while wearing white gloves, he might have got away with it but sadly a lot of the record sounds like it has been beaten by the late 80’s stick.
As is probably not surprising, a lot of the song structures seem to hang on the bass lines, and while pleasant enough there is nothing on this record that hasn’t been done before, and probably better, by someone else.

If it wasn't for men like Mick Karn, my formative years would have been filled with a lot less hairspray and eyeliner, synthesizers and saxophones.
The antithesis of punk's raw energy and three-chords-are-all-you-need ethos, they rewrote the rules and helped to ensure the Velvet Underground were never forgotten and split just as hordes of their copyists were taking the styles and sounds they created into the mainstream.
Since then, Karn has worked with everyone from Bauhaus's Pete Murphy to King Crimson's Bill Brufford via Natacha Atlas, Riyuchi Sakamoto, jazz, drum and bass and whatever else has taken his fancy.
