Topic: Mick Lewis

 [No title]
Lewis lavishes as much care on his setting as he does his characters and I am willing to bet that the average reader will forget some of the characters names and motivations after a few weeks but the squealing, pulsing jungle will stay with them for ages.
Unfortunately Lewis reuses some his themes that were so striking in Rags such as class war, horrific violence and dead mummers being the catalyst for the nightmarish eruption of gore, which makes comparisons to his earlier book inescapable.
Lewis doesn't overly characterise any of them, mostly because he only includes them so he can rip apart and dismember them and it would just be a waste of page space getting us close to these people he wants to slaughter.

His spot in the team was not secure, as the 31-year old Lewis had been dropped for the VB Series in favour of 28-year-old paceman Brett Dorey, only to be recalled late in the series to replace Glenn McGrath who had returned home due to a recurrence of his wife's cancer.
Lewis was the most expensive bowler on the team during the match, when captain Ricky Ponting brought him on for his final spell.
Lewis was already low on confidence and with the combination of a short boundary and batsman-friendly pitch, he was cannon-fodder for the South African batsmen.

Mick Lewis has made enormous long-term changes to his action to give him more longevity and variety.
Lewis has enjoyed the most unorthodox of paths to Australian selection, but if the recent Test series has shown Australia that the road to success lies in reverting to type and playing tough, uncompromising cricket, then the country's newest addition to the one-day team is an astute choice.
Born and bred in Greensborough, it was Lewis' experience of the tougher side of life that partly prepared him for the moment in 2004 that changed Victorian cricket — when a punch thrown outside the Beaconsfield Hotel left his coach and friend David Hookes dying.
