Mick McCarthy made a welcome return to club management on March 12 2003 when he was named as the new boss at Sunderland AFC, two days after Howard Wilkinson's departure from the Stadium of Light.
Mick was appointed Ireland's manager on February 5th 1996, two days before his 36th birthday, with the task of reviving the fortunes of an ageing side who had for a decade proved that the team was much, much greater than the sum of it's parts.
Mick's reputation and international experience meant he was always likely to be given a chance to fulfil his desire of managing in the top flight, and that chance came at Sunderland.

When McCarthy left Millwall, in early February after a protracted appointment as Ireland manager, Millwall were in 9th place in the division, 5 points off a promotion place, outside the playoff zone only on goal difference and a comfortable 14 points clear of the relegation zone.
McCarthy did indeed revive his World Cup hopes, being called up for friendlies against the USSR in April and Finland and Turkey in May. While Mick was named in Jack Charlton squad, Millwall teammate Garry Waddock suffered the heartbreak of being the last player cut from the squad.
McCarthy return was not to be long lived, ending in the 10th minute of his third game back, with Mick limping off damaged knee ligaments, ruining his chances of playing for Ireland at Wembley.

Mick was a good bloke who found that life in the Premiership was too big for him, and the players he brought to the Club have not performed this season.
