  Mick Pointer
Mick Pointer was the original drummer and founding member of the progressive rock band Marillion.
According to Fish, 1984's song Assassing from the Fugazi album deals at least in part with the sacking of band members in the early years of Marillion.
Pointer later formed the band Arena[?] after a longer break from the music business.

Marillion - Written by Claus Nygaard
In Mick Pointer's words, Silmarillion was incredible unfashionable, but decided to play just the style of music they liked the best: "When we first started Silmarillion, Punk was still happening, we were so incredible unfashionable (laughs), really unfashionable.
At least for the next twenty years, after which Mick one day in the rehearsal studio, working in the context of his present band Arena, was reintroduced to Neil, who himself had been using the same rehearsal studio for quite a time, now playing in another band.
Mick tells, "Cause amazingly the rehearsal room I've been to today, when I first started to go there about two and a half years ago, then the guy that runs the place he says: "Yeah, there's a guy here with us that knows you, he used to be in a band with you".

Marillion - Written by Claus Nygaard
Actually this was not Mick's first job as a drummer, he had been playing with the local band Stockade for a short period the previous year.
Together Mick and Doug formed their new band in early 1978 and they named it Silmarillion, just to put behind the unsuccessful past and mark the beginning of a new era.
The story goes that Mick, when looking for a new name for the band, just happened to have a copy of "Silmarillion" on his bookshelf, which he hadn't read, and thought it was a proper name for the "new" band.

Mick: So yeah, there have been a few things that have been particularly surprising, which is always good to have when you are on your sixth album.
Mick: You are right though that the public likes to see a stable line-up, but they have to bear in mind that Arena was started up by Clive and I, and we are the principle writers, so there’s always been that constant stability over the last 10 years.
Mick, Yeah, there’s that, and Clive is going to be working with Nick Barrett from Pendragon to do a small tour of Poland, just the two of them.

Mick Pointer has now proved to his critics that not only is he a great drummer, but his voice is grate too.
It builds up nicely into the second song titled "Magic Beans of Scorn", which tells the story of Jacks poor mother throwing the beans out of the window, after Jack tells her he has swapped their cow for a handful of beans.
The song is very emotional proving that Mick Pointer is a great songwriter, lyricist, drummer and a talented singer too.

Marillion's origins can be traced to Aylesbury, Bucks, where drummer Mick Pointer, bassist/soon-to-be-vocalist Doug Irvine, and guitarist Andy Glass decided to form a purely instrumental group under the moniker of Electric Gypsy.
The album saw the evolution of a band that was quickly leaving its influences behind and creating an unmistakable identity of its own…an identity that, according to the band, was what demanded the dismissal of drummer Mick Pointer prior to the album's making.
Despite the holding of auditions at Nomis Studios, the band opted for ex-Camel Andy Ward as a replacement for Pointer, more because of Ward's reputation than anything else, proof of which is the fact that he never auditioned for his spot in Marillion.

Arena was born out of a chance meeting in 1994 between former Marillion drummer Mick Pointer and keyboardist Clive Nolan, of Shadowland and Pendragon fame.
That project, however, was to grow into the band Arena, which took Pointer out of his kitchen architect job and had him initiate a search for an appropriate line-up with Nolan, which ended up in the acquisition of singer John Carson (Asia), bassist Cliff Orsi, and session guitarist Keith More (Porcupine Tree and later Fish).
It was during this process that the name Arena was finally secured, as Nolan and Pointer deemed it appropriate after taking into account the numerous Biblical and mythological references on the album, as well as its cover art.
