The Unbroken Circle - Current Album Reviews
By the time Mick has been persuaded to record again (in part by Donovan) the sixties were drawing towards their close and Mick would record his first album to receive proper arrangements and production.
Mick’s desire to travel and not be tied down is explored on the acoustic songs ‘Caravan’ and ‘On The Road Again’ which use the observation shown by early Al Stewart but to highlight the gypsy life.
Like Mick Softley this artist was close to Donovan in his formative years, helping him to grow his guitar style and informing his music.

Part of the ' war baby ' generation, MICK SOFTLEY grew up on the edges of Epping Forest in Essex.
Mick's debut album, 'Songs For Swingin' Survivors' was released by EMI Columbia in 1965 and sat well with several other folk releases that year including Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone'.
Shortly after the release of the album, Mick became disillusioned with the music scene and in spite of a couple of single releases he ran a wine-making business and hung out in a Transit van busking in St.Albans.

Mick Softley was a legendary folk-rock singer/songwriter of the 1960's who developed a cult following despite Born in the early 1940's, he was raised in Essex, adjacent to Epping Forest, and came of age just as skiffle and rock 'n' roll started sweeping across the British isles.
Softley was oriented a little more intellectually than most of the teenagers around him, however -- reading and writing, not listening to and playing music, were his pleasures.
His debut album proved a false-start, however, as it languished in sales, gaining Softley a wider cult following -- and one that could grow as it circulated across the years -- but that was all.

Sunrise by Mick Softley: Album Reviews
After a gap of five years following his 1965 solo acoustic folk debut LP, Songs for Swingin' Survivors, Softley emerged with his second album (although a couple of rare singles had come out in the interim).
Like many folk-based singer/songwriters who'd first recorded in the mid-'60s, Softley had made the transition from solo acoustic guitar accompaniment to a more fully arranged folk-rock sound that often used other musicians, as well as touches of jazz and Indian music, though his material wasn't all that different from when he started.
Softley had written some outstanding songs in the 1960s (some of them recorded by Donovan and Dave Berry), yet Sunrise is only an average dawn-of-the-'70s British singer/songwriter/folk-rock LP.

Comparisons with early Donovan and Bob Dylan are inevitable, in fact Donovan covered a couple of Mick's songs.
Released in 1970 and 71 respectively, these albums saw Softley progressing beyond the acoustic folk protest sound of his celebrated (and stupidly rare) first album.
Featuring a virtual who's who of the contemporary English folk scene and beyond (including members of Fotheringay, Soft Machine, and Manfred Mann) it is hardly surprising that there are touches of Indian exotica (sitar, flute) and jazzy rock, blended into the quintessentially pastoral, English, folk-rock mix.

He has said Donovan heard Hurdy Gurdy playing the song with a far more powerful rock arrangement that was similar to the familiar Donovan hit version, before the single's release.
MacLeod never did release any material with Hurdy Gurdy in the '60s, and continuing his unpredictable course, he formed a band with another British cult folky, Mick Softley (who had written some material that Donovan recorded in his early days).
The group, Soft Cloud Fiery Dragon, again didn't release anything, though one track ("Time Machine") did come out about 30 years later on a CD accompanying issue number 28 of the Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine.

Obscure is not synonymous with inconsequential, mind you, as Mac MacLeod was an early accompanist for Donovan, sang in a duo with Maddy Prior long before Prior joined Steeleye Span, worked with fellow cult British folk-rocker Mick Softley, and did some little-known recording of his own, some of which was never released.
