Mickey Dolenz and Mark Bego delve into the personal side (Mickey's take on it all), and it's an interesting read.
Mickey's book is most interesting, as far as I'm concerned, from the standpoint that he makes some interesting observations on the fame game, the highs and lows and the cost of it, and on how there's life on the other side of it.
Dolenz and Jones books respectfully discuss some of this but boy, would I love it if they all sat down at some point (Nesmith and Tork especially), and presented a unified front to what that all really felt like.

Dolenz, who as a boy starred in the TV show "Circus Boy," is no stranger to the musical stage, having previously toured with companies of "Grease," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "The Point" and "Tom Sawyer." He also wrote the book for, and directed, "Bugsy Malone" for the London stage.
Dolenz had become proficient on the drums and the four began a heated behind-the-scenes battle with producers and NBC.
Dolenz also thinks it's high time the Monkees were given their due for what they did for popular culture besides goofing around: namely, sanitizing the counterculture for the mainstream.

All four would take turns at lead vocals, as it turned out, the two actors, Jones and Dolenz, were the better singers and in time would get most of the lead vocals with Nesmith handling the vocals on the country rock tunes.
Dolenz by now was not bad on the drums, he also played guitar on the album, plus wrote the album's closing number and Jones, well, he learned to shake the maracas real nice, but really, he was the band's best singer.

For a few brief years with Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz was the drummer for The Monkees, and performed before thousands of fans in sold-out auditoriums.
In the early 1970s, after Tork and Nesmith had left the Monkees and Dolenz's first marriage was collapsing, he attempted suicide by walking into traffic and sitting down.
His father, George Dolenz, had the title role in a 1950s TV series of The Count of Monte Cristo, and was featured in such films as The Strange Death of Adolf Hitler and Vincente Minnelli's Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

In my opinion, if he were lead vocalist with any other band of the sixties, he'd be remembered as one of the best.
Like Mickey if he was given a fluff song it sucked but did he ever have a great RnR voice.
Thus proving that Mickey (although not a prolific writer) may have blown his almost whole load on one of the most haunting pieces that has ever been recorded.
