The microCHP systems are expected to be ready for volume production in 2007 in Japan and in 2008 for other markets in Asia where RINNAI is currently selling appliances and continuous-flow tankless water heaters.
In a microCHP system, electricity is generated with the same efficiency as a high-efficiency boiler — almost 100% — which means that gas with a calorific value of one kWh can produce almost a kWh of electricity.
In a microCHP system, this waste energy is recovered and used for water heating or space heating, in an appliance operating at the same efficiency as a high-efficiency boiler.

Welcome to Micropower - Micropower News
The announcement means that microCHP units now benefit from the same VAT rating as some other energy efficient products and the use of energy itself — a move designed to encourage people to invest in this new, economical and environmentally friendly technology.
MicroCHP is set to revolutionise the home energy market by enabling customers to produce part of their own electricity whilst heating their homes.
It is estimated that a microCHP would cut a typical household’s energy bills by around £150 a year and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.5 tonnes a year.

House of Commons - Science and Technology - Appendices to the Minutes of Evidence
MicroCHP is a radical and evolutionary change in home heating, which incorporates the technology of the highest efficiency boilers plus significant additional functionality including the production of electricity.
However, because it replicates the functions of a conventional boiler and this is something which domestic customers are familiar with, this technology can begin the process of familiarising domestic customers with the concept of generating their own power—making it far easier to sell technologies such as fuel cells when they become available.

MicroCHP can make even greater carbon savings than condensing boilers and we would have expected at the very least an equally sharp focus on replacing conventional boilers with MicroCHP.
MicroCHP, as a product that offers lower running costs but for a higher capital outlay, is particularly disadvantaged by this.
As things currently stand MicroCHP, despite all it's advantages, is going to be treated, at best, as though it were a conventional low efficiency boiler.

The micro-combined heat and power (microCHP) appliance from Microgen Energy and Remeha simultaneously produces electricity as well as heat, and could give energy savings of up to 25% for an average household, relative to a conventional boiler.
According to the partners, the heating appliance incorporates condensing boiler technology with a Free-Piston Stirling generator which converts the energy in natural gas to electricity and hot water for the radiators and water system.
The partners say the microCHP unit is compact, easy to install and as quiet as a condensing boiler.
