  PDA Encyclopedia - Microbrowser
A microbrowser is an internet or web browser designed for use on a handheld device such as a PDA or mobile phone.
Microbrowsers have small file sizes to accommodate the low memory capacity and low-bandwidth of wireless handheld devices.
The so-called microbrowser technologies such as WAP, NTTDocomo's i-mode platform and Openwave's HDML platform have fuelled the first wave of interest in wireless data services.

Computers Today, July 16-31, 1999, Tech Trends; The Net in Your Pocket
A microbrowser is essentially a stripped-down Web browser that is designed for use in mobile telephones or even pagers or other wireless devices.
Microbrowsers also allow the user to switch over to an interactive menu-style system that uses data exchange instead.
The microbrowser sets up an interface with the cellular networks themselves, and translates HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), usually from the Internet, into WML (Wireless Mark-up Language), which is then stored on the server.

CSD '99 - Topic of the Month Page : WAP [June 2000]
As such, a WAP session initiated from the WAP microbrowser could well be the only way that GPRS users can receive information onto their mobile terminals.
WAP is a client server philosophy, requiring a microbrowser in the mobile phone and a WAP Gateway connected to the mobile network.
By the middle of 1999, WAP clients such as the Nokia 7110 were becoming available in quantity and other phone vendors such as Alcatel and Motorola have announced that they are introducing support for the Wireless Application Protocol across their entire product range.

XML - Creating WML Documents Tutorials
For a more full-featured microbrowser and WML development environment, you might consider the Openwave SDK, which provides a highly useful microbrowser that resembles a virtual mobile phone.
Granted, some microbrowsers don't care about the file extension and will display documents okay regardless of the extension, but it's good programming practice to get it right and use the correct file extension.
Microbrowsers for wireless content are much more proprietary than HTML browsers, which means that most major mobile device manufacturers offer their own microbrowser.

 Microbrowser architectures
It's not just that Web developers need to consider mobile devices and the microbrowsers they run; the fact is, they have to consider such a wide variety of devices and microbrowsers that the job of providing broad connectivity seems nearly impossible at first glance.
And although the company was only counting on supporting a short list of devices, the new interface was coded down to the simplest possible HTML in an effort to reach a broader audience.
Add to that the fact that competition for both the client-side microbrowser and the server-side application and translation parser remains quite intense, and it seems clear that it's too soon to predict which wireless Web architectures will become the most popular.

 Wired News: Microbrowser Battle Brewing
Announcements by prominent wireless carriers to support both an open standards group and a Microsoft-backed venture for providing access to data via mobile wireless devices is raising questions about Microsoft’s strategy in the wireless data market.
But others said Microsoft’s (MSFT) entry into the wireless data market is a sign that the battle to provide Web browser interfaces for mobile devices, or "microbrowsers," could be ready to heat up.
Microsoft, which started a war with Netscape Communications (NSCP) by putting its Internet Explorer browser in its Windows operating systems, could do similar things in the mobile device industry, where it is heavily promoting Windows CE.

Microsoft to offer free microbrowser as ‘stop Symbian’ campaign | The Register
Having failed so far to get mobile phone companies to vote for CE in any significant numbers, Microsoft is now readying an alternative strategy - offer them a microbrowser free of charge for their handsets and devices.
This one, for example, appears to involve an ultra-slim browser running on top of an embedded OS, and although Microsoft would no doubt like the embedded OS to be a Microsoft one, this is by no means essential.
And the microbrowser on top of an embedded OS sounds rather like what you'd hear from Sun.
