EERE Consumer's Guide: Landscaping and Your Microclimate
When landscaping for energy efficiency, it's important to consider your microclimate along with your regional climate.
If your home is located on a sunny southern slope, it may have a warm microclimate, even if you live in a cool region.
Or, even though you live in a hot-humid region, your home may be situated in a comfortable microclimate because of abundant shade and dry breezes.

Microclimate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A microclimate is a local external atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area.
Microclimates exist, for example, near bodies of water which may cool the local atmosphere, or in heavily urban areas where brick, concrete, and asphalt absorb the sun's energy, heat up, and reradiate that heat to the ambient air.
Another contributory factor to microclimate is the aspect or slope—south-facing slopes in the Northern Hemisphere and north-facing slopes in the Southern Hemisphere are exposed to more direct sunlight than opposite slopes and are therefore warmer for longer.

History of Environmental Control in Museums and Archives by Microclimate Technologies
To this end various methods of creating microclimates using passive agents and sealed cases were explored throughout the last century, including a number of attempts to create microclimate control devices using mechanical delivery of air modified by silica gel or saturated salts.
This first Microclimate Generator was based on a novel RH conditioning concept that avoided the "spikes" and high maintenance of conventional humidity control techniques.
Microclimate Technologies' accurate, reliable, temperature-sensitive humidity control units are now used for a wide range of applications in museums, conservation workshops, and laboratories around the world.

BBC - Weather Centre - Features - Understanding Weather - Microclimates
A microclimate is 'the physical state of the atmosphere close to a very small area of the earth's surface.
The Meteorological Glossary defines a microclimate as: 'the physical state of the atmosphere close to a very small area of the earth's surface, often in relation to living matter such as crops or insects.
Generally, we take a microclimate to be the climate of a small environment such as a town, forest or garden.

 ENVS 162: Physiological Ecology Laboratory
Microclimate refers to the physical conditions in the immediate vicinity of an organism.
Microclimate is important because it impacts the survival of plants from day to day and year to year.
Clearly, microclimate will vary from species to species as scale dictates; wind speed at 50 m height is a relevant part of the microclimate for a redwood tree but not so much for a redwood sorrel (Oxalis sp.) growing in the shade of the redwood tree.

ARS | Publication request: Microclimate and Pedogenic Implications in a 50-Year-Old Chaparral and Pine Biosequence
Microclimate created by chamise may play an important role in the decomposition rate of litter, but appears to have little influence on soil processes occurring within the mineral soil.
The influence of microclimate on soil processes under chamise should be further investigated, considering its widespread distribution in the southwestern USA.
Despite the appreciable differences in soil morphology that have evolved under pine compared with oak, the microclimates created by the dense canopies and thick litter layers (7-10 cm) of these two vegetation types were similar.

 Met Office: Microclimates
A microclimate is the distinctive climate of a small-scale area, such as a garden, park, valley or part of a city.
The weather variables in a microclimate, such as temperature, rainfall, wind or humidity, may be subtly different from the conditions prevailing over the area as a whole and from those that might be reasonably expected under certain types of pressure or cloud cover.
It is these subtle differences and exceptions to the rule that make microclimates so fascinating to study, and these notes help to identify and explain the key differences which can be noticed by ground-level observations.

Microclimate in Forest Ecosystem and Landscape Ecology
Abstract: Microclimate is the suite of climatic conditions measured in localized areas near the earth's surface (Geiger 1965).
In seminal studies, Shirley (1929, 1945) emphasized microclimate as a determinant of ecological patterns in both plant and animal communities and a driver of such processes as the growth and mortality of organisms.
The importance of microclimate in influencing ecological processes such as plant regeneration and growth, soil resperation and growth, soil repiration, nutrient cycling, and wildlife habitat selection has became an essential component of current ecological research (Perry 1994).

Riparian Microclimate and Stream Temperature Response to Forest Harvesting: A Review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Forest harvesting can increase solar radiation in the riparian zone as well as wind speed and exposure to air advected from clearings, typically causing increases in summertime air, soil, and stream temperatures and decreases in relative humidity.
A range of studies has demonstrated that streams may or may not cool after flowing from clearings into shaded environments, and further research is required in relation to the factors controlling downstream cooling.
Further research is also required on riparian microclimate and its responses to harvesting, the influences of surface/subsurface water exchange on stream and bed temperature regimes, biological implications of temperature changes in headwater streams (both on site and downstream), and methods for quantifying shade and its influence on radiation inputs to streams and riparian zones.
