Public Use Microdata Sample, 1980   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Microdata samples include only a small fraction of the population, drastically limiting the chance that the record of a given individual is even contained in a microdata file, much less identifiable.
Microdata samples will be useful to users (1) who are doing research that does not require the identification of specific small geographic areas or detailed cross tabulations for small populations, and (2) who have access to programming and computer time needed to process the samples.
Microdata users frequently study relationships among census variables not shown in existing census tabulations, or concentrate on the characteristics of certain specially defined populations, such as unemployed homeowners or families with four or more children.

Texas Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS)
Public use microdata samples are extracts from the confidential microdata taken in a manner that avoids disclosure of information about households or individuals.
The 1% Public Use Microdata Sample Equivalency (PUMEQ1) file is intended to help users understand the relationships between standard Census 2000 geographic concepts (counties, county subdivisions, places, and census tracts) and the SuperPUMA geographic units of the 1% PUMS data files.
The 5% Public Use Microdata Sample Equivalency (PUMEQ5) file is intended to help users understand the relationships between standard Census 2000 geographic concepts (counties, county subdivisions, places, and census tracts) and the SuperPUMA and PUMA geographic units of the 5% PUMS data files.

 Home Page: Guide to Microdata/PUMS
Microdata are mostly original data that contains every individual (e.g., person, company, etc.) record in the survey/research samples.
The size of microdata is usually too huge to be available in print, thus computerized data storage and retrieval systems, as well as issues of file formats associated with various statistical software and operating systems, are heavily involved in working with microdata.
The guide is a gateway to microdata resources, which is intended to facilitate users in acquiring and using microdata of their interests, and also to serve as a reference tool for librarians who work in data services.

What is the IPUMS?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The flexibility offered by microdata is particularly important for historical research because the aggregate tabulations produced by the Census Bureau are often not comparable across time, and until recently the subject coverage of census publications was limited.
For the period since 1940 census microdata are subject to strict confidentiality measures that limit their usefulness for some applications.
The Integrated Public Use Microdata Series consists of a series of compatible-format individual-level representative samples of the United States for the years 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000.

Macro- and Microdata Analyses and Their Integration
In principle, the data contained in these new microdata sources should be consistent with the macrodata in the national accounts.
For example, in national accounting data, the interest received by the household sector as personal income is computed as a residual from that of other sectors, whereas in microdata the household provides a direct estimate of interest received.
The idea of statistical matching is to combine microdata files which are complementary in terms of the variables they contain or the parts of the distribution that they sample.

 Sources of Microdata
If you are not centain about what kind of microdata you are looking for, or you are not sure about the data availability, or you just want to get a general sense of what microdata is like, then this category would be a good starting point.
Microdata files were first released for the 1981 Census, containing individual, family, and household information with a hierarchical structure for a 1 percent sample sample of households.
Public use microdata files from the survey are available for 1969, 1978, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1996, through the Data Liberation Initiative member institutions or directly ordering the CDs from Statistics Canada.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Public-Use Microdata File, 2001 Data
The SSI Public-Use Microdata File drawn from the SSR represents only persons who received a federal SSI payment in December 2001; it excludes persons who received a federally administered state supplementary payment but no federal SSI payment in December 2001.
The SSI Public-Use Microdata File contains an extract of data fields from the SSR and consists of a 5 percent random, representative sample of persons who received a federal SSI payment in December 2001.
Since the sample for the SSI Public-Use Microdata File is a representative 5 percent systematic random sample of persons receiving an SSI payment in December 2001, all records have weight equal to 20.

Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Public-Use Microdata File, 2001 Data
The OASDI Public-Use Microdata File contains an extract of data fields from the MBR and consists of a 1 percent random, representative sample of persons entitled to receive an OASDI benefit payment for December 2001.
Records on the underlying file for persons entitled to receive an OASDI benefit payment for December 2001 were ordered by state, by sex within state, by age within sex, and by type of benefit within age; a systematic 1 percent random sample was then selected.
Since the sample for the OASDI Public-Use Microdata File is a representative 1 percent systematic random sample of persons entitled to receive an OASDI benefit payment for December 2001, all records have weight equal to 100.

Data swapping is done by editing the source data or exchanging records for a sample of cases.
Swapping is applied to individual records and, therefore, also protects microdata.
Instead of identifying variable categories based upon pretabulation assumptions about the composition of the population, the approach develops variable collapsing requirements after the microdata samples have been drawn.

Exposing to the light of research the conceptual and processing assumptions that are embedded in the Census Bureau's micro databases constitutes a core element in the Census Bureau's commitment to quality.
The constraints stem from the legal requirements to maintain confidentiality of the underlying microdata files to which you may be granted access, the requirement that researchers' projects benefit Census Bureau data programs, and (not least) the mission of CES itself.
