Microhistory is a branch of the study of history (A record or narrative description of past events).
Microhistory is an important component of the "new history" that has emerged since the 1960s (The decade from 1960 to 1969).
Microhistory should not be confused with the common practice of amateur historians looking at the history of their village or church, studies that almost always lack neutrality.

In this project "The Methods of Microhistory" I will attempt to fulfill three main goals: The first one is to master the historiography of microhistory and study the strengths and weaknesses of its approach.
Microhistory emerged in Italy in response to dominant trends in the French Annales-school.
All of these conceptual frameworks have greatly contributed to the development of microhistory as it is known today in the world of the humanities and social sciences.

Microhistory - as a field of study - has been in the making for the past twenty years in most of Europe and North America, but it took shape somewhat earlier in Italy around the journal Quaderni Storici, in the hands of historians such as Carlo Ginzburg, Giovanni Levi, Edoardo Grendi, and Gianna Pomata.
While this essay touches on the views and works of these scholars, its main focus is on the rise in interest in microhistory across the globe in the last decade and on the topics of recent microhistorical research.
After discussing the defining characteristics of microhistory, the author examines two currents within the Italian school, one closely tied to conventional social history, the other more in line with the new cultural history.

Since microhistory represents a relatively new approach, one that has not been emphasized in graduate schools, the purpose of the Seminar is to develop the skills of scholars who have recently embarked on such projects, or who are considering one.
Moreover, for teaching both undergraduates and graduates how historical accounts are constructed, the small compass of microhistories allows students to analyze the author’s primary sources and the judgments the author made to construct the narrative.
In addition to discussion of core microhistories, each team will report on their additional readings, making comparisons of which topics and treatments prove most satisfactory.
