Strategy Gaming Online - Reviews: Sid Meier's Civilization III
This is the first strategy game in a long time that doesn't really require the additional purchase of a third party strategy manual unless you want much more detail for detail's sake.
In one game I attacked a town occupied by a warrior unit (the weakest and first military unit in ancient times) with two infantry units.
I was playing a game and my brother walked into the room and he noted that Civilization 3 provides pretty nice background music while your playing the game.

Science Fair Projects - Micromanagement (computer gaming)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The term micromanagement (in this context, often abbreviated to simply micro) is used in strategy computer games to describe a facet of gameplay.
In turn-based strategy games, micromanagement is a style of play where the player manages the fine details of the game, as well as overall strategy.
In strategy games where micromanagement occurs, it is usually an integral and skill-testing part of the gameplay; as such it is not considered a pejorative term as it is in its original, business management sense (see micromanagement).

Micromanagement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In business management, micromanagement is a management style where a manager closely observes or controls the work of their employees, generally used as a pejorative term.
Micromanagement may arise from internal sources, such as concern for details, increased performance pressure, or insecurity.
Micromanagement can also be distinguished from management by worker to boss ratio.

Gaming Illustrated - Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The more apparent new game play features add another thick layer of strategic and tactical depth, including a whole other dangerous terrain that player’s must guide their armies through to defeat a new, quite creepy insectoid bad guy, as well as the other returning enemy wizards and their hordes.
The game play itself is mostly unchanged from Age of Wonders 2: wizards build up cities and armies, cast spells, and fight it out on a tactically rich battlefield level.
The game’s role-playing aspect is mostly a byproduct of the main game, but RPG fans may enjoy the setting and the diversity of all the different, well-represented fantasy races.

Even though I'm not a professional gamer (and I'm not considering a career in game development at the moment), computer gaming is still a non-trivial portion of my life.
The reason why I don't enjoy games like Dawn of War and Warcraft 3 as much is because the units in either of the two are categorized mainly by special abilities instead of by lethality of offense (or by class).
It all boils down to the role of gaming in my life: when I game, I want to be challenged on an abstract level.

Remember the computer is uncannily efficient in its economy and just because you killed ten zealots by the time you got your first dozen doesn't mean the computer is without zealots at all.
You'll have to draw the computer away from the shield batteries or else a battle of near equal odds on the computer's turf is actually a battle to the computer's advantage.
Win big the game is yours, win by a slim margin and the game continues, lose by a slim margin and you're still in the game if you have any reinforcements left, lose by a lot and you're dead.

Seeing a computer game based off of a board/miniature game is nothing to get worked up about, but it is what the company Eagle Games has done that caused me to raise an eyebrow.
Now those of you familiar with the computer game know that there is a lot of micromanagement that is needed for each city.
Eagle Games has done an excellent job in simplifying the game to the point where the mystique, that has propelled the Civ computer games to be leaders in their markets, has not been lost and new nuances have been brought forward to further advance the great game that is Civilization.

Thus, even though the game moves slowly, many Civ players describe their experience playing the game with the ‘just one more turn’ phenomenon – unlike action games in which most of the gameplay is episodic, in turn-based gaming most gameplay continues until the user chooses to quit.
Turn-based games allow the player to make all of his or her moves in a linear fashion during a ‘turn’, after which the computer or a competitor makes their moves.

The customizable unit design adds some flavor to the game, especially the mechs, but units typically break down to be effective against infantry, heavier units and structures, air units, or long-range assaults.
But the micromanagement of unit AI is still a problem in either quick combat or multiplayer games.

None of these are a big deal in the way the overall game plays, and they are ultimately consistent with Stardock’s goal of streamlined gameplay, but some players used to “all that and the kitchen sink” games may find their lack a little surprising.
Games like this frequently get bogged down in minutiae; just at the point where the map is full and the nuances of a zero-sum situation begin to appear, other games have so many details that they require the player to run a separate spreadsheet to keep track of it all.
