[64.03] Why Are Hyperbolic Micrometeors No Longer Detected with the Arecibo UHF Radar ?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Micrometeor detections using the AO UHF radar have been carried out since 1997.
At the size range of the detected micrometeors, perturbations by the major planets, solar photons as well as solar wind particle charging and magnetic field interactions must be taken into account.
The micrometeor flux is continuing to be closely monitored from AO.

These differences are caused by the temperature regimes of the front surface of the plate exposed to radiation and the reverse surface of the plate in the thermic cycling process which constitute 363-400 and 190 K respectively.
The results representing the basis of the process of forecasting of mass losses and thickness of the stripped surface layer, as well as the calculations of the state of micrometeor protection coverings for a period of 15 years are given in [6].
It may be deduced that carbon and glass fiber reinforced plastics used in the micrometeor protection construction of "Mir" orbital complex have high erosion resistance because the changes in the erosion indices for a service period of 15 years in the LEO will not exceed 10%.

Micrometeor observations at AO yield on average 3200 events per day in the 300 m diameter Arecibo beam.
Utilizing a Doppler technique that yields very precise measurements of micrometeor velocity and (nearly linear) decelerations allows precise mass estimates.
These results show the AO UHF/VHF radars to be unique instruments for direct measurement of the micrometeoric mass influx into the earth's atmosphere and address a number of aeronomical problems related to it.

On the geocentric micrometeor velocity distribution
We report micrometeor velocity distributions measured with unprecedented velocity and radiant resolution using the dual-beam 430 MHz Arecibo (AO) radar in Puerto Rico.
The AO radar detects over 10,000 events daily inside its 300 m radar beam that are produced mainly by particles in the size range 0.5–100 microns.

Students fashion space suits for Mars
Their concerns are not fashion pundits but exposure to micrometeor sandstorms, radiation, and a hyper-cold climate.
Unlike Earth, Mars does not have a magnetosphere to protect it from radiation and meteors and micrometeors, and astronauts on Mars will also have to deal with average temperatures of —60C.
In creating their design, the students tried to balance these concerns with the need to create a suit that the astronauts could move about in as they explored.

We report initial results from a montecarlo simulation which attempts to model the diurnal and seasonal variability of the meteor rate detected by high power and large aperture (HPLA) radars.
Based on the agreement found we predict the global and yearly input of the micrometeor flux in the atmosphere.
The probable cause for this effect is that these particles will rich high temperatures at higher altitudes ablating before they reach ~100 km.

 Broken Tether
A more difficult problem is the micrometeors that are not tracked and so can not be avoided.
An advantage of a rotating tethers over hanging tethers is that they can be much shorter for the same tip speed, and so have much less risk of being hit by a micrometeor.
However, it is necessary to plan on any tether being hit from time to time.

For results of in-flight experiments of polymer composite materials (PCM) that have been used in construction of the micrometeor protection on space station "Mir" and on new space station "Alpha" the detailed mathematical analysis has been carried out.
By means of computer analytical methods the forecast for the changes of the complex properties for long duration term was given.
For fifteen-year exploitation of the micrometeor protection constructions on LEO stations with using of recommended carbon fiber reinforced plastics the durability was guaranteed.

 Selenian Boondocks: Bigelow Aerospace Tour
They had fairly large holes in them, and one of them had a crack in the pressure vessel that probably would have ripped the module open.
Admittedly, they did throw a thicker (albeit lighter) shield at the problem, and for micrometeor impact protection, spacing between layers is what does most of the work.
The first layer will usually vaporize the micrometeor, and any spacing just allows that jet to spread out over a larger and larger region.

[45.02] Monitoring the yearly sporadic Micrometeor Flux into the upper Atmosphere using the Arecibo Dual-Beam 430 MHz Radar
A year long program of observations and study of the micrometeor flux into the upper atmosphere using the dual-beam 430 MHz Arecibo radar (AO) in Puerto Rico began in January 2002.
The AO radar detects decelerating particles in the size range 0.5-100 microns for which precise altitude, instantaneous Doppler velocity, and (linear) deceleration are obtained.
