Black bass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Micropterus Lacépède, 1802, is a genus of freshwater fish in the sunfish family (family Centrarchidae) of order Perciformes.
All Micropterus species have a dull-green base coloring with dark patterns on the sides.
The Atlantic bumper (Chloroscombrus chrysurus), while once assigned the generic name of Micropterus, is an unrelated marine fish of family Carangidae.

 ADW: Micropterus salmoides: Information
Micropterus salmoides is native to eastern North America, from as far north as southern Canada, through the Mississippi River valley system, and as far south as Florida and Northeastern Mexico.
The name Micropterus is Greek, meaning "small fin" and salmo- is Greek meaning "trout", and refers to the fact that largemouths have been referred to as trout in some states (Migdalski, 1989).
Also there are two subspecies of largemouth bass, the faster-growing Florida subspecies requires perennially warm water and is native to the extreme Southeast and has been introduced in Texas and California.

Proceedings of the Oklahoma Academy of Science
Spotted bass, Micropterus punctulatus, and Florida largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, have been widely introduced into the southern portions of the natural range of the northern largemouth bass, M.
The greatest potential of polytypic Micropterus populations, however, may be in bodies of water, such as Lake Carl Blackwell (14), in which northern largemouth bass fail to reproduce in some years.
Other strains of Micropterus with different spawning and rearing requirements might then recruit a year class that would partly use the food and space not used by northern largemouth bass in that particular year.

LARGEMOUTH BASS   (MICROPTERUS SALMOIDES)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
LARGEMOUTH BASS (MICROPTERUS SALMOIDES) The largemouth bass is a species of elongated, predatory sunfishes which are highly prized as game fish.
The basic rule of thumb in identifying the largemouth, is that the mouth extends slightly past the eye (when seen from the side) and the markings are more diffused from other species.
All Micropterus species are actually quite prolific and breeding is probably possible in captivity, particularly in public aquaria.

However, from a biology perspective, the phrase "fl bass" is actually a group that includes seven closely related species classified by the scientific genus Micropterus.
Although fl bass are distant relatives of all these species, they are close cousins to crappies and sunfish and are grouped with them in a classification called Centrarchidae.
Spotted bass are native to the central and southern Mississippi River and Gulf Coast drainages.

Speciation in North American black basses, Micropterus (Actinopterygii: Centrarchidae).   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The premise that the Pleistocene was an exceptional period of speciation in Micropterus is not supported.
The absence of substantial morphological and ecological divergence together with endemism of five of the eight species in North American tributaries of the Gulf of Mexico may be interpreted as the result of a recent Pleistocene origin for these species.
To critically assess the role of Pleistocene glaciations on the evolution of the freshwater fish clade Micropterus, we use a phylogenetic analysis of complete gene sequences from two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b and ND2), and a fossil calibration of the molecular clock to estimate ages of speciation events and rates of diversification.

Winter habitats and survival of young-of-the-year smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) at the species' northern limit.
Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) populations in the species' northern range are thought to be restricted by the loss of young-of-the-year (YOY) due to starvation over their first winter, however, little is actually known about their winter ecology.
The objectives of this study were to document YOY winter habitats in lakes, and determine if winter habitat characteristics (primarily temperature) affect YOY winter starvation and survival.
