The smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) is a species of freshwater fish in the sunfish family (Centrarchidae) of order Perciformes.
dolomieu is found only in clear water, preferring shallow, rocky-bottomed areas of lakes and rivers.
Because it is relatively intolerant of any type of pollution, the smallmouth bass is a good natural indicator of a healthy environment.

Originally confined primarily to the eastern United States of America, portions of northern Mexico and southern Canada, now can be found in every state in the U.S.A., throughout Mexico, Central America and in many other countries throughout the world.
The largemouth bass very closely resembles the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) and other species of the genus Micropterus(i.e.,spotted bass, redeye bass, ect.).
In all other species of Micropterus the mouth does not extend to the back of the eyes, the two dorsal fins are clearly connected, usually with a slight dip between them, and the scales overlap the base of the second dorsal fin.
