Topic: Microsoft LAN Manager

  LAN Manager Networking Concepts
In LAN Manager, setting up a server resource to make it available to network users is called "sharing" the resource.
When you install LAN Manager, you will be able to choose between two available security schemes to implement this access control.
For the admin's convenience, LAN Manager has been designed to allow server administration procedures to be performed not only at the server itself, but also remotely from any workstation on the network.

Lloyd Borrett - Computing - Articles - Future DOS And OS/2 Directions
Microsoft stated that Windows is not intended to be used as a server, nor will future releases contain advanced OS/2 features such as distributed processing, the 32-bit flat memory model, threads, or long file names.
These LAN products will be designed to run on the base OS/2 operating system in both client and server configurations, like LAN Manager does today, and will exploit Intel 386 and i486 functions.
In summary, IBM and Microsoft have reaffirmed their commitment to provide a graphical user interface on all platforms and significantly extending the functions of OS/2 to provide a consistent systems software base for the hardware platforms of the '90s.

XoftWare For Windows 8.0 User's Guide Appendix A
In the case of LAN Manager networks, the connection type you select depends on the LAN Manager implementation on the machine to which you wish to connect.
In some situations, LAN Manager may be installed to enable connections to non-UNIX® remote systems (such as OS/2) or to a remote LAN Manager implementation that does not have specific extensions to enable PC-based terminal emulations (such as that provided by XoftWare) to connect to it.
Microsoft LAN Manager for UNIX® Systems is the generic term typically applied to all other UNIX® implementations of LAN Manager licensed from Microsoft.

Serving up Windows on the network
Microsoft has extended the domain concept in Windows NT Server by providing network administrators with the ability to create trust relationships be- tween domains.
With the current version of LAN Server, IBM solves the problem of allowing a single point of logon for a user by allowing a workstation to log on to multiple servers in different domains simultaneously as long as the user employs the same ID and password on all the servers.
LAN Server does provide a few properties for user objects that Windows NT Server doesn't, allowing you to define drive and printer assignments and the applications that appear in the public applications folder on OS/2 desktops.

 Getting Started with ASP Messaging
NTLM stands for Windows NT LAN Manager because it was developed and originally used in Microsoft LAN Manager, one of Microsoft's earliest networking products.
Alternatively, if you plan on designing a complex application that makes intelligent decisions, for example, routing a message to a particular manager depending on what information the user provided, then you may want to write a Visual Basic® DLL for the messaging part of the application.
This is most frequently done to allow users to send mail from a Web application using Microsoft Exchange where you do not need to or are unable to authenticate the user with Windows NT Challenge\Response Authentication (also referred to as NTLM) or Basic Authentication.
