Microsoft Natural keyboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Microsoft Natural Keyboard was introduced by Microsoft in 1995.
The keyboard was a split keyboard with each half of the keyboard separated and tilted upwards and down from the center of the keyboard.
A common criticism of this keyboard is the F Lock key located right beside F12, which toggles the functions keys from sending normal signals or common task signals such as Undo Redo, Open etc. It is not possible to disable this toggle through the bundled software.

 Review: Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
The integrated palm rest built into the Natural Keyboard Pro encourages you to rest the heels of your hands while you type, which is ergonomically Very Bad, but if you use it as you're supposed to and only rest there when you're not typing at that moment, it works well.
Plug the Natural Keyboard Pro into one of the root ports and a separate hub into the other, and you'll be in business.
It's a cubicle-friendly keyboard; you won't annoy your neighbours.

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 - Review, Specs, Prices
Like the Natural keyboards before it, the NEK4000 splits the keyboard in half at a 12° angle to straighten your wrists with the alignment of the keys instead of bending your wrists at an awkward angle and cramming them together like traditional keyboards force you to do.
While the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 can also be raised at the rear, there's a platform that connects to the front of the keyboard to create the exact opposite, a reverse 7° slope.
I managed to get a hold of the older Natural Keyboard Pro for comparison, and was able to conclude that the keys are not only much quieter to the touch, but they are also easier to press and travel slightly more when pressed.

Gear Live | Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 Review
Microsoft was one of the first companies to perform major research into ergonomics, and developed the first of what would become known as a “split” keyboard, branded under the “Natural” moniker.
Microsoft is probably used to policies that prevent a user from returning defective software if the package was opened, but unfortunately for them those policies don’t cut it in the hardware world.
Also, this keyboard would have a space bar that is split either in half or into thirds, which would allow one part of the former space bar to be assigned as a backspace key (would be software configurable of course).

Fixed-Split Keyboards are the most commonly seen by most and are typically the least expensive of the split keyboards.
Cirque's Wave keyboard is modeled closely after the MS Natural with the added advantage of a built-in pointing device (GlidePoint) to eliminate the long reach beyond the numeric keypad for an external mouse.
The forward slant angle of the keyboard may be of some concern with the current trend of keeping the key surfaces as flat as possible.

Because of my example, my wife had adopted the smaller and newer Natural Keyboard Elite for her computer, and after a few days had announced she couldn't imagine ever going back to a traditional keyboard.
The keys are not as soft to the touch as the old keys were, and the arch of the keyboard is higher, as is the wrist rest.
This is a plus, as the old keyboard allowed one to cheat a bit on hand placement, and that could lead to wrist problems.

On the second keyboard I modified, I removed the 3 banks of keys and cut the right side key group separately.

 Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
While there are a ton of keyboards now on the market, many going for literally nothing, many experienced computer users as well as first-time buyers have begun to get interested in having at their fingertips advanced features that can be activated by a touch of their fingers on their keyboard.
Now there are many brands of naturally designed keyboards, but Microsoft continues to improve and enhance their "better idea." With this newest Natural Keyboard Pro, they add still more features to what you can do with the many keys on this neat keyboard.
Keyboard must be connected to a USB port and the PC must be running Windows 98 or Windows Professional, or Windows XP Home or Professional, for the 2 keyboard USB ports to work.

Microsoft confirmed our findings that the keyboard isn't PS/2 compatible; we would rather use the PS/2 connector to free up a USB port.
Also, the keyboard comes with a snap-on riser that gives the unit a bit of a backward slant, which prevents you from flexing your wrists.
Microsoft offers a three-year warranty on the keyboard and free phone support for the first 90-days--after that, support will cost $35 per request.

Microsoft has had a hit-or-miss record when it comes to PC hardware, but one thing's for sure, they are most certainly innovative.
It's not that everyone using a standard keyboard will eventually end up with metal rods in his wrists, it's just that prolonged usage of a standard keyboard without a break is not the best thing you can do for your hands.
Though the Microsoft keyboard is not the miracle cure to that problem, it does ensure that the pressure on your wrists is significantly better since it makes your hands reach it in a natural position.

No Mouse/Keyboard After Updating Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro Drivers
After you install Windows on a computer that has a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro keyboard attached (Device Manager identifies it as a "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard"), some of the Internet, multimedia, e-mail, and programmed hotkeys across the top of the keyboard do not work.
Even though your Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro keyboard has both a PS/2 and a USB connector, the keyboard itself is i8042-port-based, while the USB connector is strictly for the built-in USB hub.
NOTE: When the PS/2 plug of the keyboard is plugged in, it is a PS/2 keyboard (as stated), but the keyboard is capable of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) only mode.

As with previous Natural keyboards, the keys handled by the left-hand are separated from those intended for the right by being angled away with a triangular spacer in the middle, over the space-bar.
The natural keyboard, because of the angle of the keys, eliminates this bend and allows you to type with straight wrists, and words cannot express how much difference this makes when typing for hours at a time.
My only quibbles with this keyboard are: 1) the lack of USB ports at the top, which I cannot explain the lack of as they were extremely useful, and 2) It’ll take a while to get used to because of the split design.
