Microsoft Office Word 2003 is a great word processor, which can create print documents (the most popular type of document today), web pages (you can save in either HTML or XML format), and much more.
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 is a professional presentations application, which can be used to create presentations for print or for viewing on a computer, and save them as print publications or Web sites.
Office 2000 was a bit of a disappointment for me. I felt that the improvements were minimal (aside from a bit more stability in Word--anyone who has ever used Word 97 on a regular basis knows it's prone to crashing) and in fact detracted from the ease of use.

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Microsoft Office 11 Preview
By default, Office 11 applications store data in their native formats, but you can change that to XML on the fly or set it as the default document format if you'd like (Figure).
Office 11 documents that are stored in XML format can be round-tripped, which means that they can be edited outside of Office and then returned to, say, Word and edited again without losing any content.
Microsoft says this new view style, which essentially moves the preview pane from the lower right corner of the display to the entire right side of the display, provides 40 percent more viewing area than the previous scheme.

BOSTON (AP) - A data format used in Microsoft Corp.'s prevalent Office software line has been approved as an international standard - a move aimed at preserving access to documents created with the package for years to come.
