QuickBASIC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Microsoft QuickBASIC (often shortened, correctly, to QB, or incorrectly, to "QBasic", which is a different system) is a descendant of the BASIC programming language that was developed by the Microsoft Corporation for use with the MS-DOS operating system.
The last version of QuickBASIC was version 4.5 (1988), although there was continued development of the Microsoft Basic Professional Development System (PDS), the last release of which was version 7.1 (June 1990).
Since it lacks a compiler, it cannot be used to produce executable files directly, although programs developed using it can still be compiled by a QuickBASIC 4.5, PDS 7.1 or VBDOS 1.0 compiler, if one is available.

 Microsoft QuickBASIC compiler
Microsoft QuickBASIC (often shortened, correctly, to QB, or incorrectly, to QBASIC) is a descendant of the BASIC programming language that was developed by the Microsoft Corporation for use with the MSDOS Operating System.
It was loosely based on Microsoft GW-BASIC but in addition provided user-defined types, improved programming structures, better graphics and disk support and a compiler rather than an interpreter.
The successor to QuickBASIC and PDS was Visual Basic 1.0 which came in incompatible versions for DOS and Windows.

 Compile & Link
It is critical that you strictly follow the syntax of the language, for the current compilers are very unforgiving of typing mistakes.
For example, a compiler translates "2.1*3.2" into machine codes that in essence state, "take a real number 2.1 and a second number 3.2 and multiply the two numbers." But the codes do not yet contain instructions on how to multiply the given two numbers.
"qb.exe" is the interpreter that comes with the compiler and has a menu entry that allows you to compile the source code.

BASIC to QuickBASIC: A Basmark Odyssey
Unfortunately, the wisdom of this methodology was lost on the first Basmark compiler due to its shear complexity and the difficulty in pinpointing the internal representation.
Given that the interface between the analyzer and code generator is the central point of transformation and that the compiler is ultimately a simple program, the internal representation may be viewed as the intermediate code and the symbol table.
Compiler design theory insists that this data path ought not exist, indeed that lexical analysis may be completed prior to the start of parsing.

GW-BASIC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GW-BASIC (named after Greg Whitten, an early Microsoft employee and is known more affectionately as 'gee-whiz') was a dialect of BASIC developed by Microsoft, originally for Compaq.
It is compatible with Microsoft/IBM BASICA, but was disk based and did not require the resources of the ROM included on IBM's machines.
GW-BASIC's place in the MS-DOS distribution was eventually taken by Microsoft QBASIC, a cut-down version of the separately available Microsoft QuickBASIC compiler.

These early compilers simply allowed you to compile those applications written with the BASIC interpreter, but they were successful because of the amazing difference in execution speeds between the interpreted and compiled BASIC programs.
The Microsoft QuickBASIC compiler series was perhaps the most influential of these, being very cheap yet extending the BASIC language and producing reliable fast compiled programs.
Microsoft recently released BASIC version 7.1 which includes the Programmers WorkBench (an integrated development environment first included with Microsoft C version 6.0).
