  .microsound
.microsound is an unmediated mailing list oriented toward discussion of the styles of digital and post-digital music promulgated by the proliferation and widespread adoption of digital signal processing (dsp) tools.
.microsound is not a "genre" mailing list, since this proliferation has occurred largely without regard for stylistic boundary.
.microsound refuses to become a sounding board for ebay auctions, playlists, and the periodic expurgations of listmembers' record collections.

Roads discusses the uses of microsound in composition—focusing mainly on his own works, the aesthetics of composing with sound particles, and what he thinks the future of this field will be.
Roads is an eloquent writer with a far-reaching understanding of the history, mathematics, and possibilities of microsounds; I would have been very interested in a more thorough exposition of his ideas about the potential directions of this new frontier in music.
Microsound should appeal to composers and theorists alike; it seamlessly blends all aspects of quantum acoustics from history and mathematical theory through compositional practice and aesthetics, rewarding the reader with wonderful quotes, programming hints, and compositional inspiration.

Portable Media: Teeny, Tiny MicroSound iPod Speakers - Gizmodo
MicroSound is the brainchild of Miglia, the same company that makes the TVMax DVR system for the Mac mini.
Migilia calls the MicroSound "slim, ultra-light and ultra-modern," which are pretty strong words for a pair of small speakers that—gasp!—integrate with an iPod.
The MicroSound plugs into the headphone jack of the iPod nano (and shuffle), making it "the perfect companion for any outdoor activity."...So long as that activity lasts about 12 hours, since that's how long the MicroSound will keep playing music on a single AAA battery.

 Pipe Leak
MicroSound is a low cost, leak localisation system, which is designed to identify areas of leakage with minimal resource and infrastructure development.
The strong magnet on the base of the MicroSound noise logger is simply attached to any access point in the distribution system, such as valves, fittings or pipework, and left in place to record sound levels continuously.
MicroSound records sound in the pipework continuously during a period of low use, typically a two hour window between 2:00am and 4:00am (the default setting).

MicroSound will build the flexible circuit small enough to attach to the end of a catheter so narrow that a doctor will be able to thread it through an artery or vein and into a patient's heart.
MicroSound competes in a smaller segment of that market, one that produces so-called "high density" circuits, that is, circuits packed densely with wiring and other parts.

Cascone, inadvertently or not, is the maven of microsound.
The appellation doesn’t become him simply as co-instigator and moderator of the same so-named internet mailing list but because he long ago chose to dig deeper into the aural dirt, as it were, to the nature of sound as music.

Microsound is perhaps the best theoretical and practical guide to date, its 409 pages concisely and fluently written throughout.
Chapters three to six deal with the theory and practice of granular synthesis, examining everything from the organisation and processing of grains to the implementation of micro-scale transformations.
The later chapters explore the implications and aesthetics of composing with microsound.

The fantasy is that microsound's incorporation of glitches and errors embodies some kind of critique of technology, but I think the critique is now at the point where it risks becoming formulaic and losing its critical edge.
It's great that there's been a real shift in modes of distribution as a result of the digital technology which forms the technological base for microsound, and so we've seen a crop of CD-R and weblabels popping up which have helped to shift the way music is produced and presented and received.
Too often, microsound tends towards modes of presentation which merely parallel conventional CD's or labels, as well as usually mirroring the conventional organization of music into closed "pieces" which exist as objects of contemplation in a particular way.

Since the definition of "microsound" is somewhat flexible and arbitrary, and the parameters are a source of endless debate, it's fair (in my opinion) to include ambient and glitch artists, as well as those who process field recordings and generate rhythms, textures, and soundscapes with noise and found sounds (phonography).

Below the level of the musical note lies the realm of microsound, of sound particles lasting less than one-tenth of a second.
Recent technological advances allow us to probe and manipulate these pinpoints of sound, dissolving the traditional building blocks of music — notes and their intervals — into a more fluid and supple medium.
Sounds coalesce, evaporate, and mutate into other sounds.Composers have used theories of microsound in computer music since the 1950s.
