Damage tolerant microstructure for lamellar alloys - Patent 6974507
The current microstructure of lamellar γTiAl alloys is composed of an equiaxed (prior β) grain structure with planar lamella as shown in FIG.
In accordance with the present invention, a method for forming a damage tolerant microstructure for lamellar alloys broadly comprises the steps of casting the alloy and extruding the cast alloy at a temperature in the range of 1290 to 1315 degrees Centigrade at an extrusion ratio in the range of from 90:1 to 100:1.
The α transus temperature of this alloy is 1310 degrees Centigrade.

Resources: Standards&Properties - Microstructures of Copper and Copper Alloys
Microstructural analysis is used in failure analysis to determine the cause of failure.
Microstructural examination of a failed component is used to identify the material and the condition of the material of the component.
Microstructural analysis is used in research studies to determine the microstructural changes that occur as a result of varying parameters such as composition, heat treatment or processing steps.

Department of Chemical Engineering - Microstructure theme
The intimate relationship between a material's microstructure and its properties is of fundamental interest to the chemical engineer.
Understanding how processing affects material microstructure is therefore crucial to being able to tailor the final properties of the material and hence its suitability to a particular application.
The department has successfully developed a number of novel techniques to probe the microstructure of materials during processing using MRI, X-rays and optical methods; these techniques allow engineering processing conditions to be recreated in a controlled fashion and their effect on the material to be quantitatively and qualitatively examined.

Process for producing microstructure components on a substrate - Patent 5759616
A method according to claim 7, wherein, after said microstructure cavities are formed into said plastic material layers, any plastic material of said first layer remaining in said cavities on said substrate is removed by dusting so that said electrically conductive surface coating of said substrate is exposed at the bottom of said microstructure cavities.
This is problematic because the surface areas by which the microstructure elements are connected to the substrate are generally smaller than those surfaces by which the molded microstructure elements are in contact with the molding tool.
The height of the microstructures corresponds preferably to the height of the microstructure elements to be produced.

CiteULike: Strong flow criteria based on microstructure deformation
a measure of the form and magnitude of the velocity gradient tensor, is sufficient to induce significant deformation and/or orientation of the fluid microstructure, that is, the elements which collectively comprise the suspended phase.
When the microstructure is characterized by a vector, the flow strengths of all linear flows are displayed in a single figure from which the strength of a particular flow can be evaluated directly.
A significant difference between the two models derives from the fact that the "volume" of the microstructure must be conserved in the second-order tensor case.

 Microstructure Imaging
Microstructure Imaging is an image synthesizing technique for creating images incorporating a freely created artistic or text microstructure.
With microstructure imaging, the dots composing the image are microstructure patterns whose thickness is tuned according to the local image intensity.
This generates very characteristic images which are hard to copy and provide two layers of information, the global image layer and the microstructure layer.

ESRC Society Today - L138251036 The Impact of Macro Fundamentals, Market Microstructure and Interventions on Exchange ...
Standard macroeconomic models of exchange rate determination have proved themselves to be remarkably unsuccessful at explaining movements in foreign exchange (FX) rates in the short run.
As a result greater emphasis has been placed on microstructure factors such as ‘order flow’- net buying or selling pressure, to explain and help forecast exchange rates.
In this project, Professor Charles Goodhart and his research team from the London School of Economics, use large datasets from the Reuters D2000-2 FX trading system to test the microstructure hypotheses and extend understanding of exchange rate determination.

SEC Speech: Broad Themes in Market Microstructure: May 6, 2005 (Chester S. Spatt)
I want to emphasize several ideas and themes that cut across many microstructure issues: in particular, the ideas of (a) competition across platforms vs. competition for executing against an individual order, (b) the potential desirability or costs of internalization and counterparties to trade being intermediaries and (c) market transparency.
The importance of dynamic competition and innovation rather than a sole focus upon static competition is often stressed in microeconomic textbooks and in industrial organization economics.
The skills and sophistication of market microstructure economists with respect to frictions in the trading process are important for evaluating key policy issues.

Written by one of the leading authorities in market microstructure research, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the theoretical work in this important area of finance. After an introduction to the general issues and problems in market microstructure, the book examines the main theoretical models developed to address inventory-based issues.
There is then an extensive examination and discussion of the information-based models, with particular attention paid to the linkage with rational expectations model and learning models.
The concluding chapters are concerned with price dynamics and with applications of the various models to specific microstructure problems including: - Liquidity.- Multi-market trading.- Market structure.- Market Design Market Microstructure Theory includes extensive appendices developing Bayesian learning and the rational expectations framework.
