	Microtonal music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Microtonal music is music using microtones -- intervals of less than a semitone, or as Charles Ives put it, the "notes between the cracks" of the piano.
		Microtonal scales that are played contiguously are chromatically microtonal, those which are not use the various contiguous pitches as alternative versions of larger intervals (Burns, 1999).
		Other rock artists using microtonality in their work include Glenn Branca (who has created a number of symphonic works for ensembles of microtonally tuned electric guitars) and Jon and Brad Catler (who play microtonal electric guitar and electric bass guitar).

	Microtonal Music
		Most of the music we hear in based on a system called 12 tone equal temperament (or 12TET for short), where the octave is divided into 12 equal parts.
		Microtonal music is generally defined as any music that is not 12TET.
		Some folks base their music on the harmonic series, some divide the octave into 19 or 31 equal parts, some divide the octave into 43 unequal parts, some don't divide the octave at all....

		MICRO3 is the most recent update to a Postscript © font designed for the 1/12th-tone notation system developed by Ezra Sims for his own music and now taught in the microtone classes of New England Conservatory.

		Does anyone know a good book on the subject of microtonal music, and how the scales are developed.
		She may be able to recommend books as she is a guitarist who also studies Indian music.

	Making Microtonal Music with Software
		Thanks to the MakeMicroMusic Yahoo group and in particular Graham Breed and Manuel Op de Coul, I've successfully learned how to create arbitrarily tuned musics with the software audio compiler system, Timidity, the popular microtonal tuning software, Scala and public domain soundfonts.
		Hitting the tiny play button on the bottom of the app will start audio output, either directly to a file as I configured it or to your speakers.
		There are two ways to get Timidity to accept tunings, either through giving Timidity a MIDI Tuning Dump SYSX chunk or through the -Z argument and a file which is expected to be a column of 127 frequencies expressed as cents.
