Microtonal music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Microtonal music is music using microtones -- intervals of less than a semitone, or as Charles Ives put it, the "notes between the cracks" of the piano.
Microtonal scales that are played contiguously are chromatically microtonal, those which are not use the various contiguous pitches as alternative versions of larger intervals (Burns, 1999).
Other rock artists using microtonality in their work include Glenn Branca (who has created a number of symphonic works for ensembles of microtonally tuned electric guitars) and Jon and Brad Catler (who play microtonal electric guitar and electric bass guitar).

Sten Hostfalt > Microtonal Music & Microtonal Guitar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Both despite as well as because of it´s ancient origins and in part parallell development with 12 tone and diatonic music, microtonality is to a great extent also a development of and a natural outgrowth from traditional music and therefore contains all of it´s properties practices, techniques and history within itself.
However, none of this should be all too surprising since it is musicologically well-known that countless non-western musical forms and expressions including folk music and more recent forms such as the blues, all long have used intervals and pitches not measureable within the western(ized) and in comparison (here) somewhat academic musical perspective.
Since microtonality or any other similarly chosen word(s) of course will be far from any (and if) possible attempt of singularly complete description of the body of work of any one composer or musician, myself included, one´s own ear is as usual, most likely the ultimate guide.
