Microtonal music is a term for music which uses microtones -- intervals of less than a semitone, or as Charles Ives put it, the "notes between the cracks" of the piano.

John Curtis Franklin - Microtone Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
‘Microtone’ is a modern term, and implies the twelve theoretically uniform semitones of our equal tempered system, from which the microtones may deviate.
There is, however, a confusion in some of the sources, which seems to reflect historical developments in the use of microtones.
Aristoxenus used chrôma to denote the chromatic genus, the tetrachords of which, in its textbook form (the toniaion chrôma), are divided as semitone + semitone + tone and a half.

Microtonal music is a term for music which uses microtones-- intervals of less than a semitone, or as Charles Ives put it, the "notes between thecracks" of the piano.
The term is also used to refer to any music whose tuning is not based on semitones, such as gamelan music and Indian classical music.
Some Western composers have embraced the use of microtonal scales, dividing an octave into 19, 31, 43, 72 and other numbers of pitches such as the 24 tone quarter tone scale, rather than the more common 12.

DESIGN FOR A MICROTONE AND BRAIN WAVE GENERATOR
One method of microtonal control available to users of some MIDI systems is the utilization of preset tuning tables built into individual devices.
Probably the most promising, but least implemented approach to microtonality in MIDI systems is the bulk tuning dump introduced in 1992 by the MMA.
Some attempts to microtonally control the tuning of MIDI systems have involved the use of MIDI Pitch Bend data which bend the equally tempered pitches to the desired tuning.

It is very easy to create tuning tables by typing in the steps as ratios or cents values; by cutting and pasting the values into the input window, or by compiling a list of scales from the 2000+ set of free Scala tuning tables.
Once a MicroTone table is created, it is available as a binary file that can be read by a MIDI composing program; and the fully descriptive tuning table can be saved as a text file.
Although MIDI MicroTone produces MIDI data that is not specific to any particular hardware or software, it was created primarily for use by Alogrithmic Arts's composing programs.

 Inner Octaves and Eastern Music
The energy of microtones can reach the finer vibrations on the inner octaves of the listener’s being, but only when the listener is convinced the musician is playing that microtone intentionally.
Deliberately choosing the moment the microtone is played serves to increases the audience’s feeling of certainty, an experience that can help to open one to receive the energy of the instrument and the energy of the music it carries.
Even though it is not possible to play microtones on a piano, they found a way to overcome that, and thanks to their efforts, we now have a tradition of polyphonic music that is based on the knowledge of the inner workings of the octave, and the inner yearnings of humanity.

microtone - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about microtone
The Czech composer Alois Hába and Mexican Julián Carrillo composed in smaller divisions, and since 1984 Karlheinz Stockhausen has developed notations of up to 16ths of a tone for basset horn and flute, for example in Xi (1986) for basset horn.
Normally microtones belong in the domain of expressive pitch variation in acoustic music, being difficult to notate and perform precisely because most instruments other than the voice or violin family are designed to produce tempered pitches, or have fixed frets or keys.
When played against a drone, however, they become more clearly quantifiable as audible beat frequencies.

I’ve been interested in microtonal music for quite some time, and offer this article to shed a little light on an often misunderstood subject.
It's debatable whether many traditional folk players are playing or singing exact just intervals at all times, but it's clear that musicians of many styles use microtonal intervals as a powerfully expressive musical tool.
I have used various instruments in the past few years to further my explorations of just intonation and microtonality.

Okay, here's where the microtone stuff looses me. I assume that they are just notes produces by higher overtones/harmonics than those that we use to generate the Ionian scale.
You know, the octave is the first overtone (half the wavelenth), the perfect fifth is based on the second overtone (third the wavelength), and so on with the perfect fourth, major third, sixth, and I forget whether the second or seventh is next.
If an A is a vibration of 440 cycles per socond, a microtone would be something a little less or more, but not enough to get to the next normal [diatonic] pitch, an A# for example.

If a semitone is half of a tone (in terms of cents*), then anything smaller is classified as a microtone, or microinterval, according to this definition.
If we consider this second, more general application, we can easily see that there are a variety of artistic, theoretical and philosophical channels through which musicians may be drawn to those 'other intervals'.
As a result there are a few different disciplines, only loosely inter-related, all of which may fall into the category 'microtonality'.

question about microtonal music - Acoustic Guitar Forum
A while back an issue of Acoustic guitar mag had an article about a specially made national with strange partial frets that were designed to specifically play one particular piece of microtonal music.
I no longer have the article, but I recall it was discussing a theory of how to build scales that are different from the standard western do-re-mi etc. and include microtones.
Does anyone know a good book on the subject of microtonal music, and how the scales are developed.
