Experimental triggering of reproduction in a natural population of Microtus montanus -- Negus and Berger 196 (4295): ...
A nonbreeding winter population of Microtus montanus was given limited supplements of fresh green wheatgrass over a 2-week period.
The population was sampled at the end of the feeding period and compared to an adjacent population receiving no grass supplements.
The data suggest that Microtus montanus cues reproductive effort from chemical signals in the plant food resources.

Bruce effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bruce effect is a form of pregnancy disruption in mammals in which exposure of a female to an unknown male results in pre- (Bruce 1959) or postimplantation failure (e.g., Storey and Snow 1990).
The basic design of these experiments is that a recently inseminated female is exposed directly to an unfamiliar, nonsire male or to its urine or soiled bedding, which in turn causes her to prevent implantation or to abort or reabsorb her embryos.
Postimplantation pregnancy disruption in Microtus ochrogaster, Microtus pennsylvanicus, and Peromyscus maniculatus.

In 1990, I found Microtus to be the most abundant small mammal taxon of the remains excavated from a late Holocene site, of the Box Elder local fauna in Caddo County, Oklahoma (5).
The occlusal pattern of the cheek teeth was not diagnostic in distinguishing whether the lower jaw of the vole from Kiowa County was that of M.
In the context that Oklahoma's mammals are relatively well understood and have recently received comprehensive treatment (2), this range extension underscores the need for continued vigilance by mammalogists in order to monitor their dynamic distribution and diversity.

The Meadow Vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) is also called Field Mouse or Meadow Mouse.
In regions where Microtus pennsylvanicus is absent, the prairie vole may occupy a variety of open habitats, but in the Upper Midwest it is largely restricted to grasslands that are relatively dry and relatively undisturbed.
Because Microtus pennsylvanicus is intermediate between these two species in distribution and over-water dispersal ability, we predict that it will have more genetic structure than Oryzomys palustris, but less than Peromyscus leucopus.

On the basis of this study, strains from Microtus-related plague foci are proposed to constitute a new biovar, microtus.
Biovar microtus strains have a unique genomic profile of gene loss and pseudogene distribution, which most likely accounts for the human attenuation of this new biovar.
Moreover, there may be the implications for development of biovar microtus strains as a potential vaccine.
