Potentiometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original potentiometer is a type of bridge circuit for measuring voltages.
The word itself derives from the phrase "voltage potential," and "potential" was used to refer to "strength." The original potentiometers are divided into four main classes: the constant resistance potentiometer, the constant current potentiometer, the microvolt potentiometer and the thermocouple potentiometer.
The constant resistance potentiometer is a variation of the basic idea in which a variable current is fed through a fixed resistor.

 HearTwave® II Microvolt T-Wave Alternans System - Medgadget - www.medgadget.com
Microvolt T-Wave Alternans is a beat-to-beat fluctuation in the amplitude of the T-wave at a microvolt level.
Microvolt T-Wave Alternans was cleared by the FDA for its ability to predict ventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
How the system interprets and classifies the Microvolt T-Wave Alternans test report as positive, negative, or indeterminate requires a determination of whether Microvolt T-Wave Alternans is present, and if it is present, is it sustained or consistently present above the threshold heart rate which is referred to as onset heart rate.

 Cambridge Heart - MTWA Indepth
Microvolt T-Wave Alternans is defined as an alternation in the morphology of the T-wave in an every other beat or AB-AB pattern.
These efforts established a link between visually imperceptible alternans at the microvolt level and susceptibility to arrhythmias and showed alternans to be a heart rate dependent phenomenon.
The appearance of Microvolt T-Wave Alternans indicates the presence of a type of cellular metabolic activity that frequently leads to ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Breaking News: Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Testing To Be Covered by Humana
Using innovative technologies, the Company is addressing such key problems in cardiac diagnosis as the identification of those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
The Company's products incorporate its proprietary technology, Microvolt T-Wave Alternans, and are the first diagnostic tools cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to non-invasively measure microvolt levels of T-wave alternans.
These tiny heartbeat variations - measured at one millionth of a volt - are detected in any clinical setting where titration of the heart rate is possible.

Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Testing to Risk Stratify Patients Being Considered for ICD Therapy for Primary Prevention of ...
This Assessment evaluates the available evidence to determine the effect on health outcomes of using microvolt T-wave alternans (MTWA) testing to risk stratify patients who might be considered for ICD therapy for primary prevention of sudden death.
Microvolt T-wave alternans (MTWA) testing may be performed using a commercially available system called the Heartwave™ Alternans Processing System marketed by Cambridge Heart, Inc. This system received 510(k) clearances on November 17, 2002 (K03564) and July 16, 2002 (K022152).
Therefore, the use of microvolt T-wave alternans testing for risk stratifying patients being considered for implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy for primary prevention of sudden death does not meet the TEC criteria.

A Head Start to a Healthy Heart
The company's ability to measure electrical alternans on a microvolt level has been clinically proven to be just as accurate as—and in some studies, more accurate than—more costly and somewhat risky, invasive procedures, such as electrophysiological testing that involves the insertion of a catheter into a patient's heart to deliberately induce ventricular arrhythmias.
While other noninvasive measurement tests are performed during rest or normal activity the Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test is administered while patients' heart rates are elevated, during exercise or pharmacological stress.
NASA and the NSBRI are currently supporting research involving the Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test to determine whether space flight increases the risk of severe ventricular arrhythmias, and, if so, whether effective countermeasures can be developed.

Medicare Approves New Test to Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest
The test, called the Microvolt T-Wave Alternans, "is covered for the evaluation of patients at risk of sudden cardiac death, only when the spectral analytic method is used," according to CMS.
Sudden Cardiac Death, sometimes referred to as Sudden Cardiac Arrest, is a failure in the heart's electrical system in which the heart stops suddenly and without warning.
The Company's products incorporate its proprietary technology, Microvolt T-Wave Alternans, and are the only diagnostic tools cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to non-invasively measure microvolt levels of T-wave alternans.

The Company’s products incorporate their proprietary Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test™ (MTWA) technology and are the first diagnostic tool cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to non-invasively predict which individuals may be at risk of ventricular arrhythmias and SCD.
Conversely, those patients who test negative for Microvolt T-Wave Alternans have been demonstrated to be at very low risk and may not benefit from invasive implantable defibrillator therapy.
Cambridge Heart's Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test™ measures subtle fluctuations in the human heartbeat, known as Microvolt T-Wave Alternans, which can be used to identify patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest, the leading cause of death in the United States.
