  Natural History
The sonoran coral snake, Micruroides euryxanthus, is primarily found in the Southwestern portion of the United States and Western Mexico, primarily along the coast and mountain ranges up to an elevation of 5800 feet and excluding Baja California (Stebbins, 2003).
Micruroides euryxanthus spends a lot of its time underground and among rocks in crevices, which may explain its flat body morphology (Stebbins, 2003).
It is likely that Micruroides euryxanthus coloration is aposematic by nature and that harmless batesian mimics have evolved to take advantage of the lower predation rates associated with the tricolor pattern of Micruroides euryxanthus.

 Reptiles Magazine - Guildelines
During the 1950s, I worked in a laboratory at the University of Florida Medical College where we were primarily interested in the way crotalid snake venom was made by the gland of the snake and the way it worked in the body of the prey.
We became adept at raising and caring for the North American coral snakes, several species of the South American coral snakes and even some of the tiny Micruroides euryxanthus, the Sonoran coral snake, which we were given from Dr. Frederick Shannon's extensive collection after his sad death.
We were sure we had made a new observation and were even thinking about the addition of a new unit of measurement to the biological lexicon: "The Microfart." Of course, when we got to the library, we found that these microfarts had been observed before and even characterized on an audiospectrometer.

 Research
The California mountain kingsnake is a member of a diverse group of tri-colored (white, fl and red banded) North American colubrid snakes.
Though non-venomous, they are thought to be warningly colored (aposematic) Batesian mimics of dangerous tropical coral snakes in the genera Micrurus and Micruroides.
However, the more the mimic and unpalatable model resemble each other the greater the chance of possible predation upon the model as a result from birds learning that the pattern is not always potentially lethal.

The snout generally is white or cream colored.
This species can be confused with the venomous Western coral snake (Micruroides euryxanthus), but Western coral snakes do not naturally occur in Nevada.
Other fl, red, and white-banded snakes can be distinguished from the Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake by having wider white bands on the sides and belly than on the back.

Another US coral snake is Micruroides euryxanthus (Sonoran or Arizona coral snake); but this is a relatively innocuous snake, and no deaths have been attributed to its bite.
Coral snakes tend to be relatively shy creatures, and bites are uncommon.

 Sororan Serpents
Nearly all spend most of their lives secluded in a variety of refugia, awaiting appropriate climatic and endogenous cues to allow activity.
Of the 21 snake species found in Arizona Upland habitat near Tucson, only the 5 rattlesnakes and western coralsnake (Micruroides euryxanthus) are dangerously venomous to people.
A few others are opisthoglyphs, snakes with enlarged grooved teeth in the rear of the upper jaw which conducts relatively mild venom designed to immobilize small prey.

The coral snake, Micruroides euryxanthus, occurs between 1125 and 1500 meters elevation in New Mexico *10*(Degenhart et al., 1995 - in press).

Mike Friedman, PhD Program in Biology-EEB, Graduate Center, City University of New York
Does the evolution of the model induce co-evolution of the mimics?
Theoretically, by conferring differential selective advantages on models and mimics, the mimetic association between coral snakes (Micrurus, Micruroides) and milksnakes (Lampropeltis triangulum) could lead to co-evolution between sympatric populations of the two groups.
Co-evolution would be mediated by predator response to aposematic coloration.
