 Stephen Leigh:  Dark Water's Embrace
Mictlan was settled about a century before the novel opens, but an explosion on the starship which brought the colonists to the new world meant that only nine people survived.
The majority of the book is spent examining the society the humans have established on Mictlan, although Leigh does include a few tangents such as Anais Kode-Levin's, his main character, examination of the remains of one of the extinct Miccail, the race native to the planet.
The humans on Mictlan are amazingly bereft of any desire to explore their surroundings or the past of the planet, a lack which Leigh explains by the difficulties of life there.

Mictlan, like Hades, is not synonymous with Hell: it is simply where souls go when they die.
The soul must then pass through eight deserts with all their heat and other dangers before coming, at last, to a great river where friendly yellow or fl dogs wait to help them cross it.
MIctlan itself is not a place of woe, but one very much like the surface world where souls live and work as they did before.

 M:tB V.1 - The Mictlan: Origins,...
The Mictlan's influence on human society was always of a religious nature, they were the earthly representation of the gods, and ruled as a theocracy.
After the Conquest, the Mictlan had to abandon their roles as gods and became rogues and demons; by observing the Camarilla, they adapted their usual strategy of domination -religion- into politics, though they vowed never to forget their origins; never to become so fascinated with intrigue as to forget their connection to the gods.
However, as history progressed, the Mictlan broke its ties with the Hierarchy, seeing the wave of intolerance that was rising and remained loyal to the Ferrymen, who still took the indian dead to the Far Shore of Mictlan.

 Chronicles of Chaos - MICTLAN
Loaded to the brim with unrelenting, punishing blast beats, razor-sharp time changes, insane start/stop onslaughts and an atmosphere of suffering and decay bordering on the tangible, Mictlan is graced with a colossal and abrasive production, that testifies to these Australians' dedication to musical perfection.
Truth be told, Mictlan's only failure is its brevity; at 11 minutes (including a dispensable two-minute industrial outro), this murderous surge of energy seems to ebb just too fast for its own good, and is guaranteed to leave death metal addicts craving for more.
