Quiet village curbs its noisy youths | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited
Set 12 miles to the west of Edinburgh, Mid Calder is the sort of commuter village so favoured by families in an area with one of the highest proportions of under 16s in Scotland.
Walking through the streets of Mid Calder in daylight it is difficult to believe the village is an evening venue for yobbish behaviour.
This weekend Mid Calder's park was deserted, and at the local shop Ishrat Aslam said she had not had to put up with young people pestering passing adults into buying drink for them.

Mid Calder Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
These days Mid Calder is bypassed by the main roads running west from Edinburgh to Livingston and beyond, and it is easy to assume this must always have been so.
Meanwhile, Mid Calder also lay on the main turnpike road from Edinburgh to Glasgow, adding a steady flow of east-west traffic to the seasonal influx of drovers heading south.
And the final factor leading to the Mid Calder you see today has been the dramatic growth of nearby Livingston, now the second largest settlement in the Lothians and whose main shopping centre only a mile or so to the west.

Scotland on Sunday - Opinion - Clearing the streets will never succeed in exorcising society's demons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The decision to turn Mid Calder, where houses fetch up to £475,000, into a dispersal zone reminds me of what happened in the upmarket Darras Hall estate in Northumberland in the early Nineties, not long after riots in neighbouring Tyneside.
Mid Calder is attempting to present its troubles in the same light, referring to the need for the "community" to reclaim the streets from "the yobs".
If Mid Calder, and other troubled towns and villages, are going to tackle anti-social behaviour long-term, they need to heal those divisions, not sharpen them by creating an under-class whose freedom of movement has been denied.

BBC - h2g2 - Mid Calder, West Lothian, UK
Mid Calder is typical of many villages in the Edinburgh commuting belt, it has an old "core" of a village center, made up of two or three main streets, lined by buildings of varying age from earlier in the 20th Century and older.
About a mile or less outside the center of the village is Calder House, with its estate extending to the limits of the village.
This has filled the available land and Mid Calder hasn't had any new building for the last five years or so, so its housing capacity is steady.
