Devon is a large county in South West England, bordering on Cornwall to the west, Dorset and Somerset to the east.
Devon has also given its name to a geological era: the Devonian era (the era before the carboniferous stage), so-called because the distinctive red-sandstone of Exmoor was studied by geologists here.
Devon and South Devon are breeds of cattle that originated in the county.

Radiation experts from across the country are in the South West for a major conference on mobile phone mast emissions organised by a Devon council.
Local authorities in the county say they need more information into the possible health risks associated with the masts before they grant permission for them to built close to public facilities.
However, Mid Devon District Council wants to take that a step further by stipulating phone masts should not be sited within 500m of schools, hospitals or homes.
