Mid-range speaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A loudspeaker driver that produces the frequency range from approximately 300–5000 hertz is known as a mid-range.
Mid-range drivers are usually cone type or dome type.
The diaphragm of a cone speaker is a truncated cone, with the voice coil surrounding the narrow end and the suspension at the wide end.

 Loudspeaker History
The objectives in the design of these loudspeakers were uniform response over the whole tonal range of the orchestra, an enhanced sound power output capacity without noticeable non-linear distortion and uniform distribution of the emitted sound at all frequencies throughout a wide solid angle.
For the low frequency range 40-300 hz, a large moving coil-driven cone diaphragm in a large baffle expanding from a 12-in throat to a 60-inch mouth over a total length of 10 ft. This 3-way system was introduced in motion picture theaters as "Wide Range" reproduction.
The first priority was the electronic amplifier using the new vacuum tube, second was the microphone, and third was the loudspeaker that would improve the "balanced armature" units developed for public address.

Summary - Home HiFi Kits Column Speakers
The mid- to high-range is covered by the W 100 S 8 Ohm and DT 94 8 Ohm from the ALTO series of speakers.
As a result, while the excellent characteristics experienced in the mid-to-high range remain the same, the level accuracy and dynamics in the bass department have been increased and the lower limiting frequency reduced to a remarkable 23 Hz.
This projects the sound away from the speakers into the room, in such a way that the instruments and voices are perfectly positioned and - provided the speakers are positioned away from the walls - the listener is treated to excellent spatial sound.

 DIY Audio Speaker FAQ
One good example of a spherical speaker is the Gallo Nucleus Solo, on the right, which is made of rolled steel or brass.
The mid and tweeter should be at roughly the ear level of the listener (when sitting) so that the sound doesn't seem to come from above or below.
Both the mid and woofer are designed to work in an enclosure of a specific size.

 B & W 602 vs 603 speakers difference
They say that the passive/radiation speaker may provide a sweeter sound and more bass, but its bad because there is no current driving it and needs to be helped by the mid-range speaker (which requires more current from the receiver/Amp and also loss in the voice reproduction ?).
Another bad point is that the 603 only has a 6.5" mid range driver where the 602 has a 7" mid range speaker.
The two best speakers I have found that fit my listening style is B and W 602 and 603.

 Why Bi-Amping is Better
Sometimes, the speaker cone movement caused by low frequencies prevents the speaker from accurately reproducing the mid-range - this is called intermodulation distortion.
In a full-range speaker, the woofer is required to make the large cone movements necessary for low frequencies, and at the same time make much more subtle movements to reproduce midrange.
However, most manufacturers make subs that match the appearance and dimensions of their full range speakers for a matched look when the speakers are stacked.

 Re: Door speaker upgrade
Steve, If your speakers are located below the armrest then you have 5.25" woofer and 3" midrange with the tweeter mounted high on the door near the windwo switches.
They also carry a large selection of component speakers (tweeter and mid sub separates w/cross over) that would enable you to replace the tweeter and woofer and install a new more modern cross over.
You can use the cheap Nokia (stock) crossover (it is located under the panel your speakers are mounted to) but I think you will not get full performance from your new speakers if you take that option.

Ramsdell Pro Audio - Support - Choosing the Right Full Range Speaker
The next step in improving the directivity of your system is to use a speaker cabinet that horn loads the lower mid's as well as the high frequencies.
The ability of your speaker to shoot a portion of its output in a smaller, more defined area is called ‘pattern control.' The first step in improving the pattern control of your speaker is to use a high frequency horn.
Because this speaker design shoots 98% of its sound in areas where you are not in, this type of speaker would sound unintelligible in an acoustically poor, reverberant room.

If your speaker also has a mid-range speaker, the woofer will probably be responsible for a narrower range of low-frequency signals only.
Each woofer will have a different frequency range, but a typical woofer will responsible for everything between the high-frequency signals of the tweeter and the very low-frequency signals of the subwoofer.
A subwoofer reproduces low-frequency signals, usually in the range from 20 Hz to 80 Hz.
