Junior Common Room - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Junior Common Room (JCR) is used in many British universities to refer to the collective of students (similar to a students' union) at a constituent college of the university, as well as to a physical room set aside for the college students' use.
The Junior Common Room stands in contrast to the Middle Common Room, referring to postgraduates doing masters, PGCEs and PhDs, and the Senior Common Room, which refers to the collection of faculty, instructors, and advisors at the college.
The concept of the JCR is hinted at also in the Harry Potter books and films as each of the four halls of the school has its own common room, modeled on the JCR.

The Middle Common Room of St Peter's College   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Middle common rooms (or graduate common rooms as they are called at some colleges) are made up of the graduate student population of a college, and complements the junior common rooms, which mainly serve undergraduates' interests, and the senior common rooms that are the domain of the fellows and college teachers.
In that sense the Middle Common Room is both the local student union (holding for instance termly general meetings where everyone is encouraged to air their views and opinions) and graduates' most immediate a social network.
We, of course, hold our own Middle Common Room in high esteem, and although we cannot boast to be rich in endowments and sport grand and mediaeval rooms, we proud ourselves in being a small, sociable, and most importantly a friendly society.
