 Melbourne's Tramway History.
The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
An extension of one mile to Brighton Beach railway station was opened on 22nd December 1906 making a total length of 5 miles 12 chains.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Mr Batchelor said following discussions with the Maribyrnong City council officers, the removal of Middle Footscray Station would not be pursued for an airport link, and the Government would consider offering to negotiate to purchase the whole of the two affected residential properties near the station once the planning schemes had been finalised.
Melbourne Airport had been extremely cooperative and had now agreed to reduce the amount of tunnelling required on the Albion East option, making this a more realistic alternative, he said.
The Broadmeadows proposal was advertised for public comment and an independent Panel and Advisory Committee was appointed to consider submissions and report to the Government.

Eventually it was decided that the station between Footscray and West Footscray should be "Middle Footscray".
Maidstone : A municipal post town 5 miles west of Melbourne near the Saltwater River and 1 mile from West Footscray Station; Quarries, Victorian powder magazine and Melbourne Meat Preserving Company.
In 1905 the Hotham Street Station League and the Victoria Street Railway Station League, two local groups who lobbied the State Government for railway stations in their area, each agreed to raise a contribution £400 for this purpose.
